Hello all, newbie here.So i would like to say nice to meet you all.I have a question, that hopefully someone can maybe point me in the right direction.Just bought a 1995 4Runner SR5 and while at idle it shakes more then what i would assume to be regular. When i press on the gas pedal,it smooths right out.Any advice you have would be very welcome.Thank you in advance.

Fouled plugs?

Clogged fuel injector nozzles?

Dirty fuel filter?

Bad spark plug wire?

EGR, PCV or other hose plugged up or accidentally unhooked?

Those are just a few wild guesses. Good luck at finding what ails your vehicle, though!

Post up the RPMs and it may help someone point you in a more specific direction. At what RPM does it idle and at what point does it smooth out?

experienced similar symptoms......rough idle in gear, smoothed out in neutral ....this past Tuesday, the check engine light came on, so I went to the dealership. They ran diagnostics and said there were two things going on ...the EGR valve was bad, and I have a cracked exhaust manifold .....that's the cause of the rough idle/vibration/rumble....so you might want to check those two things on yours..........

They quoted $292 to replace the EGR valve ($192 @ Autozone); and $475 to replace the exhaust manifold ($164 @ Autozone, plus another $20 for gaskets)......so I'm going to take it to the local technical college, buy the parts, and have their advanced auto class do the work.......for perhaps another $50 over cost.

A well tuned engine is fairly smooth at idle, with an even exhaust note. While you may have the timing correct, adjusting the valves is the first place I'd go. The uneven valve operation can cause slight unevenness between cylinders, thus causing the lumpiness of the idle. Another possibility is worn engine mounts but given the exhaust sound,.

good idea...free labor is always cool as long as they don't mess up.
