So this is a thing with Toyota, Subaru, and BMW from my experience. Don't think that bailing to another brand will spare you from TPMS. Subaru wanted $150 to reset the TPMS on my Fiance's Forester in order to mount new tires. Our local shop did it for free.

If it really bothers you then get a TPMS tool and do it yourself.

No it isn't about them wanting money for resetting the TPMS. It bothers me if they engineered it in such a way that other shops can't do it even without the right training and equipment. I was under the impression that the Costco techs couldn't do it because the dealership had some proprietary information or equipment for the sole purpose of making a few quick bucks. I now know that is not the case.

FWIW, among other reasons, this is why I have never, and will never own any Apple device.

if you think this is bad, i would have customers extremly pissed off at me when i worked at Toyota because they either bought the cheapest sensor they could find on amazon or another shop put the cheapest sensor they could get to fix a mistake, and techstream couldnt program them or took multiple trys before taking. not to mention all theproblems we would see with aftermarket sensors losing connection. it got so bad that we had to have customers sign a disclaimer that they would be charged and no guarantee on the parts or labor if they didnt purchase OEM, because of all the problems

Good luck finding a new car without this system. Before you go blaming Toyota maybe do a little research first. I'm not a hard core Toyota fanboy but I see no reason to be pissed at the manufacturer for something the NHTSA forced them to do. FYI the 4Runner and Toyota in general have extremely low cost of ownership numbers so if your pissed about 50$ then enjoy nearly EVERY OTHER CAR on the road cause after a few years you'll beg to get back into one.
Different strokes for different folks I guess. Enjoy being miserable over nothing.

Some mfgs use the ABS sensors instead. Better switch to VW, they treat their customers right!
My Costco is great. The tire guys know their stuff.

I don't know what electrical tape is. Sounds expensive. I tried some duct tape before I took the car to the dealership. It didn't work because at one point I lost a wheel completely and was running on three wheels and the damn light being covered up and all, didn't warn me. Almost ran over TrdinOhio. That was when I decided to be ANGRY and DEMAND justice and started a two week saga to recover 50 dollars. And lemme tell you, the sweet taste of justice finally served with the fresh smell of 50 dollars almost gave me a boner right there in front of the Costco tire counter. :bounce:

65 ft lbs. They are set so they cannot over torque the lug nuts. All lugs are hand-torqued which is more than you get at most places.
