So I have been thinking about upgrading my 2015 Limited stock radio to an aftermarket radio but I had a few concerns. I was worried that it would make my car look stupid because it would not have buttons like the stock radio does. In the past, I have seen Tesla style radio's for Tundras but never any for a 4Runner. I found the company, Phoenix Android Radios, and looked for a radio for a 4runner. They did not have any so I messaged them because that is what they said to do if there is not a radio for your car. I did and they were quick to reply. They said :

I researched these quite a bit for my RAM 1500 a few months back. They run an old android version that can't be updated. For some folks they run fine but for most there were just little quirks everywhere. For the most part they could get it to work but for what they cost the quirks were not worth it for me.

The one that was always a big issue was the call quality via bluetooth. They didn't use the OEM mic but one built into the face of the unit. Was pretty common for call quality to suck. A few people soldered in their own aftermarket external mic that fixed it but again, for the money you shouldn't have to. Maybe they finally just installed an external mic plug.

That being said, in the RAM it also had to control the heater and AC which caused more problems. The OEM head unit in a RAM 1500 is very integrated with the entire truck.

My buddy has one in his tundra and is about ready to put his stock unit back in. Apparently it looks better than it functions.

I have a pioneer AVH1300 head unit in my Tacoma and I love it. Definitely putting one in the 4R soon

I most certainly would rather ask you guys before asking blindly at the stealership. Like the OP, I would like my new stereo to be in congruence with the Toyota knobs and feel of the overall dash. Do you guys think it is relatively easy to walk into a Toyota dealership and get this older stereo modernized and still stay within Toyota, or have the vehicle layouts within the 4Runner 5gens changed so much since mine in 2010 that it would be relatively impossible? Hope all this makes sense.

There are several routes you can take, but none are going to give you what you want.

If you go with an aftermarket Head Unit, you're replacing the dash kit as well, and I'm not aware of any known solutions for dash kits with knobs (or aftermarket HU that use the Toyota knobs).

You could take a used stock HU from someone who is replacing theirs with an aftermarket piece and new dash kit. You can probably get it for cheap and it should integrate into your setup without many hiccups, unless there are changes between your model and later models. Then you'd potentially have an entune touchscreen display, but you're still stuck with the same problems everyone else has (no car play, etc; entune sucks, etc).

Read up what others have done here with head units and stereo replacement, and tell us what you end up doing.

I thought I read somewhere that they are interchangeable unless you want to mess with rewiring some things.

seems like he'd need the dash too; I assume the wiring is straightforward, but not like i've done this swap
