If you had $9,000 for a Sporty Car...

If you had around $9,000 for a sportyish car what would you get?

I've just been tossing around the idea of picking up a car to satisfy the younger guy in me. Ha.

I'm not looking to drag race, street race, any of that stuff. I would just want something that is quick and fun.

The first thing that came to my mind is a 00-03 Mustang GT. I personally think they look really good with a few mods and with cams and a few other bolt ons can put out a little over 300 HP.

I also drove my Grandparents Legacy GT 2.5 turbo yesterday and have to say that is fun to drive too. Pretty good acceleration and I liked the all wheel drive. I might could get an '03, but it would be hard.

You can buy an early '90s Vette for that kinda money, but I'm not sure how the HP rating of say a 91 Vette would compare to a Stang

I did a quick search on Autotrader around here and a '98 SVT COBRA, with 78,xxx miles popped up at $8998

Good find. That one has the 4V motor too, which puts out more power.

Do you own a vehicle with the 2.5GT?

Gotta be honest, I'm not a huge fan of the S2000. They just don't seem manly to me.

no i dont but I have driven plenty (used to work at a Sub dealer) and they are fun, and gotta luv AWD, i dunno what they go for but its the 05+ model legacy GT im talking about
 
You can throw some simple mods on the Legacy turbo and eat the Mustang for a lot less money and none will require touching the engine.

I have a '93 Mitsu Eclipse GSX and those are a hoot to drive but finding one that hasn't been trashed by someone or just plain stock seems impossible nowadays but the rarity makes them kinda cool.

Bone stock with 20k on the od pushing out 195hp.

Cut air canister w/K&N, 3" turbo back exhaust,fuel pump,ACT 2600 clutch,18g turbo with 550cc injectors,Apexi Super Air Flow convertor,hard piping.

Raced it (a tick or two quicker than a Viper GTS) and collected over 400 timeslips in 8 seasons and was hard to beat on the street with AWD.

I'd buy a Miata. It isn't fast in a straight line, but you'll have more fun and you'll be a better driver.
 
If you have the money to maintain one I would say start looking out for a 97-99 bmw m3.the legacy gt is nice but there turbos blow around 100k and they are REALLY expensive to fix.I just seen a 2002 cl type-s in my local paper yesterday and it was a 5speed.had 105,00 miles and they were only charging 6,000. the first thing that came to my mind was to sell the 4runner lol or offer it up for trade to the person.but then reality kicked in and I relized in the midst of my adrelin going crazy (because I just seen a super rare cl s 5speed for sale locally at a great price) I relized I need to keep the 4runner as it suits my needs more.Plus I think I would rather have a bike now :guitar3:

I agree with Presta24. The 2.5 GT's are awesome cars. They are like sleepers. No one expects a four door Legacy to be that fast or fun to drive. It has to be 05-06 though, after that they added some computer control knob to select the engine performance and the never felt as quick as the models without it. Also, needs to be stick! If you were really lucky you'd get a Spec-B, but that's way more than $9,000.

I say go buy an old F-Body Trans Am. I am partial though since I have an 88' GTA!
 
I'd stay away from a mustang... everyone has one and i just don't think they are that cool (personal opinion). How about a Acura RSX? I drove one with a few mods this past weekend and was pretty impressed. Handled pretty awesomely and was quick. How about an older WRX? maybe 02-04?

I recently saw an e46 M3 for sale at around $12000 IIRC. That means it won't be long before those are around your price range. An M3 will wipe the floor with an old mustang. The M3 is a full blown sports car and not a "sporty" car, imho.

Of course, maintenance costs will kill you. Tires cost an arm and a leg and need to be replaced frequently. A water pump costs $650. =/
 
Pick up an E39 540i6 (1997-2003 BMW 5-series 6-speed). Great RWD car, quick and fun to drive and in your price range. Starts out with 290hp and with basic mods can easily hit 320 which will put you at 60mph in just over 5 seconds. Not bad for a family sedan.

$9k can get you a really nice VR6 or 1.8T gti. if you go 1.8T you can have a fun little project and with not too much money make it a really quick little beast.. VR6 is a great motor too super smooth and sounds awesome.
 
If you could find a WRX, that would be awesome.

Though if I had a 4Runner only and wanted to add a second "sporty car" then I would definitely get something with 2 doors. For $9K you could get a used S13 or S14 240SX and do a swap with an RB motor from a GT-R. If you could do the work yourself and the car wasn't too expensive to begin with then you could do it with $9K.

I'm not really too familiar with prices of used cars down in the US so it's kinda hard to think of cars under 9K. A Mustang GT would be fun though. 350Z maybe? Someone mentioned S2000s for under 9K so perhaps Z's are under $9k in the US? How bout a 300Z? Mitsubishi 3000GT/Dodge Stealth R/T TT? Camaro SS?
