Thing is you still have a radiator with xxxxxx miles on it that could potentially fail. I know the tranny cooler by itself is cheaper and avoids the pink milkshake. But why not just get a complete new unit for $100, and have a new tranny cooler AND radiator that you know is safe for another 100k miles easily. I got a new Denso unit (which I believe was the OEM radiator in my truck as well) just over a month ago for $150. I paid a little more than the Koyo unit, but I trust Denso. It was really easy to install. And to my surprise at 185k my radiator and coolant were really clean!

I only said that because of the other thread...Dr Coffee got into a huge argument with others about the effectiveness of the tranny cooler...just being sarcastic.
I agree with you though, although I still have my stock radiator...I'll change it out one of these days.

As stated above I just replaced my radiator, and I have a question maybe you guys can shed some light on.
When I installed the new radiator I used Toyota Red, and filled it up till it was full to the cap, which turned out to be about 2 cups less than the manual calls for on a coolant drain and refill. I wasnt concerned about that, as I figured after running it over the next few days some coolant would push into the overflow reservoir, and then I could add the rest of my Toyota Red. However now almost 2 months later, nothing has gone into the overflow reservoir. But the coolant is still full to the cap in the radiator. So is there any significance to that? Does it just mean there's a perfect amount of coolant so that it simply hasn't had to pass into the overflow?

Can people not debate without getting butt hurt on these forums? I don't post nearly as much as I should considering how much I read on these forums, but I did read the arguments of Dr Coffee vs. whoever (Because that's what it was, him vs. everyone else).
Give the guy a break. He's trying to make good points. Although his presentation isn't perfect, nobody is. I will say when I bought my 4runner with 114K miles, the first two things I did was buy Tacoma LBJ's, and a Koyo Radiator. I didn't want to have the burden of LBJ and stock radiator failure on my mind. In a way it's kind of like the 3.0 V6 motor's head gasket problem. It will happen eventually.

This is apples and oranges. The topic is general inexpensive maintenance. The minimal maintenance you should do instead of waiting for something to fail, especially if the failure will cost you thousands.
Speaking of duches, where is tbst on this one. I'm kind of disappointed.

The system will balance itself out. Just keep adding to the resevior until it no longer needs it. Generally speaking, if you aren't overheating and the heater works, everything is fine after a refill.

-Uncontrollable need for attention..
