So, what you are saying, speaking for everyone else who might come across this thread, is that there is absolutely no point in engaging in any sort of basic, civil political discourse? And, that there is no point in providing a background for remarks that are relevant to the topic at hand? I am pretty sure this is the exact mindset that trump is counting on. In the interest of survival, I would highly recommend at least trying to keep an open mind. Believe me, I have tried to give trump a chance, as I too am tired of political correctness run amok, and we desperately need to shake things up. But death therapy is highly overrated as far as I am concerned.
No, there have already been several threads on those topics. Feel free to start another if you wish. This thread is a hypothetical exercise simply asking if you had to vote for one who would it be? This gives the Canadians a chance to vote too.

Most things I agree with you on, but this one I don't. The idea of voting, IMO, is not to side with a possible victor between two candidates who have the best chance of winning.

A vote is a choice, and possibly the only voice many have that can be heard by our current government. One should vote NOT to try siding with a winning team (bandwagon fan?), but rather to select the individual you feel best deserves that vote. If that is a 3rd party candidate, then so be it.

If enough disgusted voters go that route, it would get noticed. And may even make a 3rd party viable (eventually). If 30% vote for the Independent candidate, and Trump or Hillary win with say, 36% (leaving 34% for the runner up), would all those Independent votes be wasted, or would they have an impact?

What's that old saying about doing the same thing over and over while expecting different results? The D's and R's would LOVE for everyone to buy into the "wasted vote" line of thought - it helps keep their current shell game intact.

Geez man read the first post! They have your goldfish! Seriously, while your comments are commendable and might work sometime, this time it's between Trump and Clinton and any other vote is useless in determining the victor. It might accomplish other things but not who wins. This thread is about who you would vote for that has a chance of winning.

Okay, FINE. I love my little goldfish, please don't hurt him! :moping: I pulled the lever for Trump. Can I have my fish back now?

Yeah, I didn't mean to hijack. Just trying to remind people that thankfully we don't have to chose between the two of them. In reality, one vote never decides, but a third party vote would get your voice heard the loudest.

Pretty sure my math skills are passable lol. See, you are letting emotion and all that crap get in the way of logic. Sure independents are the most coveted voters. By who? By those two candidates! How can you say a vote for someone who has no chance of winning is not a wasted vote? Moral victory yes. Logical no. I don't like either candidate but I know that unless I vote for one of them then my vote goes for naught. Like voting for Pedro.

You sir are a fibbing from one engineer to another our math skills are terrible, I'd be lost without my calculator. Sure I can do calculus in my head but ask me to add 2+2 and I am completely lost. We also have terrible handwriting and cannot spell. Good day sir

It's not about policy changes.

It's not about living with yourself.

It's about winning the election. Simple logic.

If I vote for Clinton then I cancel a vote for Trump.
If I vote for Trump then I cancel a vote for Clinton
If I vote for Pedro... I throw away my chance to vote for a possible victor.

You are making too big a deal over this. Trump or Clinton. Pick one because one is going to be Potus.

Sadly there are many who fail to grasp this concept. They would rather have 100% of nothing instead of X% of something...

I am primarily a liberal, in that I believe in liberal social principles and the importance of a strong government that creates and enforces laws to help create and maintain a fair and just society. However, I am also in favor of individual freedom, as long as it doesn't cause harm to others. I am a strong supporter of the second amendment, and yet I also believe in implementing thorough background checks and limiting access to large capacity magazines. My point is that I, like I think many people, am not one hundred percent on one side or the other on every issue.

I am not happy with our current president either, but not for the reasons most people subscribe to. I think the biggest failure of the current administration is not ever finding a way to substantially punish anybody for the near collapse of our economy. Let's face it, there was collusion between multiple specific individuals at the ratings agencies involved and the bond traders and brokerages that created and dealt in fraudulent investments. The inability of the current administration to bring charges and prosecute any specific individuals is absolutely criminal in and of itself.

My point is, that as much as I see another Clinton presidency as a continuation of the status quo, which is pretty awful, I'll take four years of that over the potential horrors of a trump presidency. I fear that four years of trump could run our country into the ground in ways that most people can't even fathom. He could substantially damage relations between our country and most, if not all, of our allies. Worse yet, he appears poised, and likely, to escalate racial, ethnic and religious tensions to the point of near civil war. Also, don't kid yourselves, there are still plenty of people out there, some of them high level politicians and military strategists, who believe it is possible to "win" in a limited nuclear arms exchange scenario. Trump strikes me as one who might be led to subscribe to this type of theory. In his zeal to make sure he is being as politically incorrect as possible he might just be the one to bring about total global destruction. I know, most people think this is extreme thinking and highly unlikely, but I would argue that just twenty years ago a great deal of what has transpired in politics and world events would have been considered pretty far fetched.
Your beliefs are all but identical to mine, with a few exceptions. One being that I consider myself more a conservative than a liberal; I guess that is based on which issues are more important. Technically I'm a social moderate (who leans liberal) and fiscal moderate (who leans conservative), which puts me directly in line with Johnson. And yes, those views are totally compatible. But I'll always self-identify as a conservative at heart.

You really should look into the views and ideals of Gary Johnson. You might be surprised.

With all due respect to the OP and his goldfish goons, this election is actually one that a third party could win. Both major party candidates have abysmal approval ratings. If the millions of people who claim to hate both candidates were to vote for Johnson instead of staying home he'd easily go all the way.

But realistically that won't happen. Instead of thinking logically and voting for the best choice, the majority of people will do what they always do and vote out of fear. This is described perfectly by bigbillyt in his last paragraph. He doesn't like Clinton, but he fears Trump. On the other end of the spectrum are millions of people who don't like Trump but fear what will happen if Clinton gets a supreme court pick. Thanks to that type of thinking we will be stuck with one of the two.

General Note:
THIS is what a political thread could and should be like. Instead of falling into the cliche of name calling and debasement there is actually civil, sometimes humorous, conversation. I know that I cannot change political bent with simple words on a screen but I can at least make someone think for a brief moment.

Trump is still taking eight out of ten votes here lol. What's interesting is most of the pontification is on the Clinton side.

i've seen "liar" get thrown out a lot in reference to Clinton, but Trump can and doesmatch her lie for lie. So when you throw out liar it really should be that they are each liars, like most politicians in general. And that should not factor into your decision since they both are equal in that sense.

i like that nobody here is stating Trump has NO political experience on his resume. And to some of you that is a good thing, but to others it maybe should be a bad thing.

tbh, i am on the gary johnson train even though yes it will be a wasted vote, but we need more political parties. 2 is not cutting it, and the only way to get a 3rd part into a debate is when the 3rd party candidate must "have a level of support of at least 15% (fifteen percent) of the national electorate as determined by five national public opinion polling organizations selected by CPD, using the average of those organizations’ most recent publicly-reported results at the time of the determination." (source:Result of Third-Party Lawsuit Could Decide Outcome of 2016 Election)

on election day i will go vote, and its either going to be GJ or ANYONE BUT TRUMP. i have dystopic nightmares about him leading the country like a dictator with military marches and nukes and the horror and offending every foreign head of state he is forced to shake hands with. He is a child at best. And children should not be leading the country. but that's my opinion and we all know they are like armpits and we all have them, and they all... well you know the rest.

I think that the "fear" of a significant third party for most "conservatives" is that it will, in all likelihood, stem from the Republican party. After watching this American election cycle from the outside, I would believe that the Democratic party has as much to lose if not more. The current system is so susceptible to corruption (without penalty) that a third party is nothing but inevitable given that either major party really not longer represent their bases or even the electorate once elected. Trump is not a conservative or even a Republican, he is just after the prize & plunder.......the fact that he and Sanders have done so well begs for a viable significant third option. I think Gary Johnson needs to be added to the poll  :pray2:.........what says you OP? BTW, it's a rhetorical question......

Again, while it is nice to think in terms of "what should or could happen" the cold, stark reality of this election is Trump or Clinton will get elected. It sucks but it's true. I want to vote for someone else but logically I want my voice to count, even though it is a tiny voice with no bully pulpit. So if I want my vote to count I have two choices. That's it. Adding Gary Johnson to my poll here is just like adding him to the real ballot. It will make you feel good to vote for him but it will make no difference as to who our next president is going to be.

Sure we need a third or fourth party. Other countries have 26 or 60 but that is a topic for another thread at another time. I'm surprised we actually have been able to have two parties for this long.

One of the more disturbing things about this US election, and the political trend in general, is people seemingly abandoning the center. Similar to what happened in parts of Europe it seems like people are becoming more entrenched in their right wing or left wing beliefs. I feel candidates like Trump or Sanders wouldn't have stood a chance a decade ago.

PS- This thread HAS remained more civil than most. It may be because a certain agitator has been quieter than usual. At least in the last few pages.

Our political system has finally gone completely into the crapper. I am so tired of the left vs. right nonsense. They are all corrupt and no longer represent the American people in even the most fundamental way. Now, no sane person will go near running for higher office.

I am primarily a liberal, in that I believe in liberal social principles and the importance of a strong government

Seems kind of contradictory. . . :usa2:

JD if I wanted I could be Canadian too and continue with the backhanded comments, but I guess I'm the "agitator" because I asked for facts and proof? Crazy. . .eh?

I'm reluctantly voting for Trump. I was considering Gary Johnson, but the anti-Trump protesters with this "America was never great" crap, is pushing me towards Trump.

I suppose if I had to vote for one I'd pick the candidate not endorsed by the KKK.

I suppose if I had top vote for one I'd pick the candidate not endorsed by the Arab Spring.

(Hmmm, b/w radical Muslims hellbent on killing all infidels vs. bunch of dumbasses under bed sheets with holes....)

Don't hate on the Klan because a few dummies and their dogma on crooked views. The Klan is good for the perseverance of America. Local 50 Union Carpenter and I reckon democrat but really the poll title nails it with the noun character. I am a live free and let live free; butt out my business kinda guy.
