What is the usual lifespan of the ignition coils of our 3rd gens and what kind of issues would they cause when they do start to fail?

They either work or they don’t. There is no in between where a coil would not work one day and then work the next.

That "gray area" is coils failing when hot and throwing errors. Vehicles that run fine when cold but as the coil gets hot it fails.

They could last a million miles or more like a lot of sealed electrical components. But one could fail at any time. Also but...The coil boots are replaceable, those are the things that have a finite life. The rubber breaks down and gets hairline cracks from heat and arcs out. So good to replace the coil boots when replacing a wire set. For the 3.4L you can get an oem Denso set of 3 from rockauto for $32.79.

I didn't know you could order just these. Thanks for the link, I'm gonna get some for my next spark plug job, Mine are getting a little mushy and worn.

Jan 2022 im reading this to see about potentially getting new ignition coils for my new to me 4runner with 200k. seen this post from 2018 where a 3pack of denso coils was going for 33 dollars on rockauto. Today that same coil in a SINGLE pack from rockauto is 37 dollars.

The link you’re referring to is for the coil boots only, not the coils themselves.
I put new coil packs on ( Denso...rock auto) this fall with a full tune up ( wires/plugs) and a bunch of other stuff. I had the coils sitting around from another project so thought why not. I was having no issues or codes. Just age ( now 22) and miles (245k) I thought why not. Old coils are in my parts bin.....just in case.
I have found on past projects for them to go bad when hot and have had them just flat out quit. I have also had one where when doing a tune up , that the harness connecting to a coil went bad and would not click on again tight, those too can get brittle with age.

Just checked. RockAuto I'm seeing for a 99 4runner 3.4L Denso 3 pack of coil boots part #6716248 is $40.89
