Ignition help

Heres my problem, the 85 4runner that I've been trying to get road legal here in Maine gave us a new hiccup yesterday. While returning from its first failed inspection I thought I was smelling something funny, Kinda electrical hot or may be brakes hot, I just redid the brakes so I shrugged it off and didn't really notice it again. The next day I went out to get to work on the 6 point list of failure, and after removing the fog lights that came installed but unwired, not working being a failpoint, I needed to role down the rear window to get to work on the not functioning rear wiper, failpoint #2 so when I turned on the ignition, nothing, I mean nothing, no radio beep , no nothing. Hooked up jumper cables, knowing thats not the problem but anyway after a couple of minutes I smell smoke. It's coming from the Jacobs electronic ignition thats installed by previous owner. Now I can wrench away with the manual all day and get about any job done but electrical problems I just feel behind the bubble on that crap.
This previous owner also has some Jacobs coil computer installed also but it seems to not be hooked up currently as I can see the OEM coil doing the job now. My question is about the Jacobs stuff, is it worth the hassle or does the OEM work fine? Any input will be appreciated.
Pictures will follow, before someone has a fit about that.
Thanks

If you do a search for fusible link you will find an old post with a great description for the removal of the fusible link minus the pictures. Thanks to this board, what a great resource. I followed the directions and changed out that fuse easy as pie.
