Ignition Lock Cylinder Housing Question

Can you post a picture?
Are talking about the button you push to remove the cylinder, or maybe the part that is at the back of the cylinder?
If it is on the part you remove that is an easy fix however it sounds like it is the part that remains as a unit bolted to the steering shaft. If so I'm not sure there is an easy way to fix besides finding a parts rig at the local yard and taking the whole setup. I myself have never had to go that far, and I don't know if Toyota does it but some manufactures use breakaway bolts that will break by design when you try and unscrew it so if that is the case you need to get some dealer bolts. With that being said most dealers won't sell just the bolts, it comes as a package deal $$$$$

The side of the part that is broken turns the ignition switch.
I can not find this part in any store or and web site, If I cannot find the part soon, I am considering buying a remote control start system

Man, that is a tough one. A remote start would be a great feature to have but not a good option to just be the only way to start your truck.
First before you travel down that path see if you can find any salvage yards that have any 4 runners or Tacoma's. Now it might be difficult because to get the cylinder out as you know first hand you need the key. Another thing to look into is the local locksmith shop, if you have AAA call them and have them recomend one, there are many out there but few that are honest.
I work tomorrow so I will take the photo and see if any of the more seasoned locksmith have a good way to fix your problem, something like JB weld or who knows what. I myself just removed my ignition not to long ago so that I could remove the split wafers which are a pain in the ass when they get worn out, and I don't recall mine looking the same although I had just the regular steel key and not the black head RFI type, so maybe that's the difference.
I work till one Wests coast time and will let you know what I find out. In the meantime do a little calling around it might just save you some money.

Did you ever get this problem resolved? My 98 4runner is having the same problem and I can't find the broken rod anywhere. Weird. I found a couple used part called bracket online and am thinking about using them if they are good. Would be interested in knowing how you resolve your problem. Thanks for sharing.

I'm having the same problem. I have the replacement rod that broke, but I can't seem to get it back into sequence with the:
key-> ignition column-> ignition housing-> ignition switch
Has anyone replaced this part before?

Solved:
I finally figured out how to insert the rod while bypassing the wheel lock spring.
You need 2 long screwdrivers, preferably flat heads and thin. Just use one screwdriver to push back the spring on the right hand side of the housing. When you push it back flush against the wall, at 12 o'clock there is a small slot that opens up. Stick your second screwdriver into that slot. This will allow you to release the first screwdriver pushing against the spring. Keep your second screwdriver in that slot and insert the rod. When it's in, turn the rod to the acc. position. Then manually turn the ignition switch in acc. position and install ignition switch. The rod should line up perfectly with the ignition switch. Finally insert the ignition cylinder, in acc. position, and your done! This should take 5 mins.
It took me about 2 hours of screwing around until I finally figure this out. I hope it helps.

sorry about reviving an old thread, but I have this same problem
That shaft behind the lock cylinder broke.
I've been trying to find a diagram of that assembly (I downloaded the FSM), but I can't find one anywhere.
Anyone know the part # I need? Or even better, a link?

If anyone else runs into this issue, the part # is 45280. The numbers after vary by model.
Toyota still wants to sell me the entire "upper bracket assembly" :mmph:
The local dealers want $300! :crazy:
I've decided to just eliminate the steering wheel lock completely. I removed the entire assembly yesterday. I can now drive the truck fine using a flathead screwdriver to start it :biggrin2:

We had a 2007 Camry hybrid, so I'm excited to have a smart key system similar to that. We now have a 2013 Corolla, but I think we're going to sell that and get another hybrid Camry. If you're staying on the dirt, the TCH is one of the finest vehicles made. We test drove one last week, along with a Tundra
. I can't really justify the truck, but I've never really liked the Corolla. I wanted to get her the Camry then, but at the time it made more financial sense to get the Corolla.Anyway, I love the smart keys that use RFID, so it seemed silly to me to spend the money to repair this when I can get improved function for less money.
I was already planning to start a build thread for my truck since I have some suspension parts coming next week, but perhaps this mod will be the first section. :laugh:
If anyone is struggling with this problem and decides to go this route, just make the decision and cut that whole bracket assembly off. I messed with mine far too long before I finally got the Dremel out and cut the damn thing off. :tongue1:

Broken aluminum cast spindle
Hi everyone, I have been following your inputs, so greatfull it's full of info, but now that I have the very same exact problem with the broken cast spindle that connects the ignition cylinder to the electrical ignition, the rod is broken, and it looks like it has no name and I couldn't get to get it on line , is there anyone know where and how can I get it please? Thanks in advance

I realize this is an older thread, I have the same broken part on my 1997 4Runner SR5, manual, tilt. I have been unable to find this part new or used. Where would I find the best price on new? If I do get one how do I get the old one off, it uses break away security bolts. Now the key wont turn and I don't seem to be able to remove the ignition key cylinder any more. Maybe its time to have it towed away.
