ignition timing problem

Hi, I have 1988 22RE Toyota 4runner manual transmission. My problem is that I have set the ignition timing to cca 30° to get the engine runs with power. When the timing is set to 5° the engine has no power. I also have error code 51 when jump the TE1 and E1. The car never had A/C. Do you have idea what could be wrong ?

When you're adjusting the ignition timing make sure that you have te&e1 jumped. As for your A/C, don't worry about your code. It won't give you a CEL (I deleted my a/c). The ECU just stores that code and it doesn't do anything with it.

Yes, when I set my timing I have 750 RPM and te&e1 jumped. When I set it to 5° I can run only on 1sr and 2nd gear with low power. When I set timing to cca 30° the engine runs well but little missfiring on the iddle.
I am running with this 30° timing for long years as same as all other 4runners here in Czech Republic I know (they also have 51 error code), my old idea was that we have here 95 octans gasoline so the timing must be earlier than in USA with 87 octans gasoline. But today I checked friend of mine new 1988 22RE 4runner he bought from Switzerland and his engine runs amazing with 5° timing and no 51 code. This car also has no A/C and never had. So I returned to this problem and want to solve it.

cca means circa - approximately

Well, at 30* your runner shouldn't even turn run. I would check your cam timing and make sure that you're not off by a tooth or two. Check your timing chain guides and make sure that they're in good shape.

I have new timing set from engnbldr and is installed well It was the first thing when I bought the car about 12 years ago to check the timing chanin, guiders and tensioner. Then I changed it one year ago. And the problem still remains. As I wrote above, I thought that it is the gasoline octane reason. But today I seen first 22RE engine runs with correct timing and I was very surprised.

I found that not only here in Europe are timing problems same as we have - check this forum question on 22re timing. so I am gonna to check my TPS and will post feedback then.

I checked the TPS and now I can confirm that the voltage and resistance is bad. What is crazy that engine still run and accelerate same when I unplug the TPS :jaw drop: It looks I was driving without the TPS for all years I have the car...

So I resolved my problem after many years - I installed new TPS and now all is working fine !

In most cases if the TPS is out of adjustment or not working, the motor will run like poop. You got lucky, it sounds like your ECU was just running in open loop mode. Do you recall what your gas mileage was before? If your ECU no longer runs in open loop then you should get much better gas mileage.

Yep, my mileage was relativery poor (about 14 litres per 100 Km) but I attributed it to my 31"-32" tires. I will measure it and will let here know if something will change.
