Im 16 And just recieved a 98 4runner limited i want to rock crawl. What do i need?

On a serious note, sh1ts gonna cost a ton of cash

If your daddy is loaded buy a pre built rig. If your 16 with a poop job and school you should just lift and put some tires.

You won't really get all the way there with just $1k, but you can make an already very capable rig better. You could do one of the following:

Lift
Armor
Re-gear
Tires

But I will suggest what most people here would suggest, do all your maintenance and wear and tear parts before you do anything else. Check your LBJ's and TRE's, plugs and wires, fuel filter, etc. It doesn't matter if you have a lift, armor, or big knobby tires; if you bust an LBJ, lose a spark plug, or blow a diff bearing, you are not going to be able to rock crawl. YOu will get farther with a rig that runs well than one with big tires.

I know that isn't what a 16 year old wants to hear, but it is the truth. Unless you know (i.e. have receipts) that it has been serviced properly it's whole life, you gotta take care of the drivetrain first.
 
1: make sure your parents are loaded
2: if not drop outa school and just work full time and put all your cash into it!

usually you start with armor if ya want to crawl.
 
Take that $1000 and invest it. Your going to need more than that to be trail ready. My tires alone were 1500, just the rubber. But thats not neccessary for "crawling". And you wanna crawl?! Mud? Trail-run? Crawling might be the most expensive because you need a tough suspension(with a lot of flex), decent tires for gripping, and ARMOR!, along with custom cut fenders for clearance. Crawling is a tough sport on vehicles. With a 1000, your better off starting with a nice leveling kit or suspension lift.

However, there is also the small chance that you could put a budget lift ($500) and some Treadwright M/T's ($500) and then drive the piss out of it for the next 6 years and it would just keep running. I've seen it happen.

This is what I just did with my truck. I did the LC/TRD lift. As far as lifts go, this will be the best cheapest route. I also have the Treadwright Guard Dogs. I don't know how technical you are but you may need to consider having to pay someone to install. Lift 300$ Tires 600$ installed. I also have been doing regular maintenance since I have had the vehicle. Just this week I did my brakes (free warranty) Oil Change (free alignment company screwed up) Alignment (65$) and tie rod (60$ from alignment screw up) Good luck
 
I should have put it as trail riding, more of clean trails with minor rocks... I want it lifted of course but i want some articulation/flexment within the axels as well

Don't get discouraged by people saying it costs tons of money to wheel. It CAN cost tons of money to wheel either by dumping money into your rig or not purchasing key items.

I know its not fun as a lift and big tires, but here is how i think you should spend your money. Keep in mind, this is just my recommendation. Its your money so do what you want with it. Just don't come crying when you break something and didn't take my advice

1. Maintenance. Like others have said, get your truck running it top shape before you take it out wheeling. It really sucks to get stranded up on a trail and have to pay the huge tow bill to get your truck out.

2. Recovery gear. Keep at least a yank strap and a couple shackles in your rig at all times. One of those hand winches is not a bad idea either. Make sure you have front and rear recovery points too.

3. CB. All wheelers should have one. Read this thread http://www.toyota-4runner.org/audio-electronics/108253-cb-radios-their-importance.html

4. Skids/sliders. Pretty self explanatory. The less vulnerable your rig is underneath, the less likely you are to break crap

5. Lift/Tires so you can drive over bigger stuff.

I can go on but you get the idea. These rigs are plenty capable in stock form. Take care of any maintenance and pick up some stuff to make sure you don't get stranded. Do that and you will have a blast.

If you don't have one already, get a job. You will love your 4Runner more with every dollar.

Get good grades and then major in something that will actually pay some cash in 2018 (hint: science & tech). This is so you can afford the next one.

Don't go into debt. You have have to pay those loans back sucker!


Wait ... was this a life question or about 4Runners?

Ok well then try this ... don't drink or text and drive. Don't crash your rig like so many kids on T4R do. Unfortunately we see it all the time.

Especially don't drive into a brick mailbox!
