The headunit looks very nice...hmmm, i may get it for my Sienna. I wonder how it acts with the Sienna's OEM JBL audio system/amplifier/DSP. May have to stop by BB and ask.

Apple CarPlay? Oops you got me there! As far as the JBL goes, I remember the Geek saying he was relieved to see that I did not have the JBL - something about extra expense would have been involved if I had the JBL cuz of different wires and stuff going to the speakers or something - so you should definitely ask them about it first before taking the plunge.

Thai, the ApplePlay is really cool by the way - you'll love it - and it gives you a navigation system via your phone which is awesome! Also, I really love the Pandora feature, pic below, which also works with the steering wheel buttons

How does the map feature behave when you lose cell signal for a period of time?

I had a chance to drive a buddy's Tesla and their nav system is basically google maps. Went through a stretch of no cell signal and the map basically went to hell, especially the resolution. You couldn't zoom in to street level, you were basically stuck at a 50,000 foot level.

I'm sorry Cygnus but I have no idea - I haven't encountered that problem. One benefit of living in Florida I suppose is we are so flat we're rarely w/out a cell signal - I would imagine it could be a problem though in the Rockies. I would gladly trade you my excellent cell coverage for some of your mountains

My guess is that your Apple Maps will go to hell too if no cell signal for a long time. It runs off your iPhone. This is why i also have GARMIN Maps on my iPhone which does not need cell service...but you do need about 2.5 GB of space for the app. I used Garmin app when i go up the mountains where Sprint service is non-existent.

Figured as much. I wish apple and google maps had a feature to keep certain maps perma-loaded in storage. I have Verizon and I'm pretty much stuck on Edge, maybe 1 bar of 3G, all the way from Berthoud to Idaho Springs.

I think Google Maps allows you to pre-load your route (to some degree)...but of course, if you deviate then you're on your own. I have never used this feature but did hear about it. Maybe you can look around the Google Maps app. For me, b/w Apple Maps (daily use) and Garmin app (when no service), i have it covered. Maybe you should buy Garmin or Navigon apps. I got my Garmin 2-3 years ago during Thanksgiving sale for 1/2 price. Maybe keep an eye out for the sale and jump on it.

The main thing to keep in mind about Apple and Android/Google Maps is that they are based on internet data not stored GPS data. Google Maps does have an option to preload some of the map content in case cell coverage is lost. I have been looking at 3rd party apps that have map databases and use both data and GPS to provide good coverage.

From what I understand the JBL set-up in Toyotas at least uses some sort of weird pulse-width modulated signal to communicate with the amp and such. A few guys trying to swap Scion Head Units into 4th gens ran into it (a shame since I have a JBL set-up and could probably get one cheap... )
