Well a 2001 came up..2nd owner. so clean. could not pass it up. paid what she was asking... was first call..others were serious and waiting in driveway....no shit...really....really
its a 2001. Yes they have issues. at this point...who cares. Now I have to figure out this 4wd system...would have loved a simple brake master and a j shift transfer case. oh well. now i got more to learn thanks to this forum.

YAHOO I GOT A 3rd gen

btw...263k and paid 4500... and thats a good deal up here

Congratulations! Not sure what problems you’re talking about though. My 2001 gave in to rust at 265k due to all our winter salt, but didn’t ever give me any mechanical trouble.

Best wishes on yours!

the funky crazy expensive master cylinder, and the system not being a j shift transfercase and not having an elocker...i got so used to being able to slam it down into 4wd on the fly, and having the elocker up here...wow.....such a help
but its a 3rd gen, and they are the best

2001 and 2002 have the actuator 4wd button. They aren't like the J shift 2 position and a botton. So high low and 4wd.

Throttle body is drive by wire with a throttle cable just for emergency.

The abs along with the master cylinder and if it has it VSC and trac all run off that big module replacing your master cylinder.

Folks like to complain if they break but it is advance ments in technology as Toyota was moving forward.

You also will have 2 Cats instead of 1 as2001 they increased the federal emission requirement.

Yeah man!

Were you able to retain the totaled truck to swap mods over?

no I was not able to. Had no place to put it and had other pressing stuff going on, so just signed it over. But I hae tons of parts on the shelf, new and used, and still have the ARB bumper that I did not get a chance to install.
funny , I am going to call the wrecking yard that has it and see if I can buy some parts back off of it. Just some small stuff

from what I can tell, it does have VSC and Trac. I actually pick it up today ( friday) if I can get a ride to it, its pretty far out. If not saturday.

since you have many 4runners and different years, whats your thoughts on the vsc/trac system ? I have read where people disable them. Seems some dont like the vsc as it throttles your engine down when wheels slip

Like everything else 3Bears. When the VSC and Trac function correctly they are great. Lots of people get tired of messing with them when they start having to work on the systems. I haven't decided wither I am going to put a kill switch on my 2001 yet or not.

My 2009 tocuma has it in but i dont drive it in the salt. When i first got it I took it in the snow once before the salt trucks were out to see how it handled. I had the darn truck sideways in the middle of the road when all the crap kick in. Then I realized all this new stuff was in it. So you do have to drive differently.. I suspect for a while you maybe disabling it. OR at least practice somewhere to see how it handles with those 2 systems on.

Right now. I am only driving the 1998 Tetanus 1 which is old school 4wd...

im gonna miss the old school for a while,
I am not gonna pick it up for a few days and drop it off at a tire shop first. It only has all season tires on it, and where I live, its either chains of good snows. In town it will be fine, but im up on some steep hill on snow and ice packed roads, and I already lost one 4runner on the road home, and it had good snows on it. ( but I was driving too fast, too)

I might do a kill switch as well, at least for the VSC from what I have read of people complain about that more than the TRAC system.
I also need to find info on if a lift causes issues with those systems, as I would like to go up a bit ( since 2001 and 2002 sit lower) Not more than a 3 inch lift, might even do less, but also need to support my arb bumper and winch, that i had just gotten for my now totaled 2000, but had not yet installed and I have some nice wheels and tires that not sure if will fit the 2001, barely fit my 2000 when it had 99 talls, but no issue with the 2000 when I lifted it further.

Welcome Back!

Those ATRAC master cylidners fail at the DC motor, more specifically the commutator and can be replaced DIY. All new Taco's TRD offroad and Pro, 4Runners come with that crazy expensive master pump.

Best thing is you got AWD 4Runner and if I am correct it was an option for early 3rd gens and standard for later. Most new Taco's and 4R's are NOT AWD and is not available in AWD.

Wish my 97 is an AWD. We get icy roads for 10-14 days in late January. AWD is the safest

finally got to drive it home, and it ran like shi*. Test drive ran good, Bought it and took to a tire shop yesterday for winter tires, drove good, no issues. Starts right up. Picked up this morning, ran fine for first 20 minutes, then check engine light came on and ran like crap. Smells like raw gas out exhaust. Then last few miles coming home was up hill, and went gutless. Got home and shut it off and it had a hard time starting again. Argg
well...will pull out my code reader this morning when I get some daylight (we only get a few hours this time of year). no condensation in oil or under oil cap, no bubbling in the radiator. Hopefully just a stuck injector or the idle control valve is gummed up.
oh well...was cheap rig to buy. Straight, and everything works fine.
Guess I bought a project car. Even with new tires I am 800 less than the insurance gave me for the totaled one. And they are so hard to find up here.
