I'm Getting Close

After searching all over the West coast via internet and phone for several weeks, I found the 4Runner I want.
It's a brand new 2006 SE V8, Galactic Gray Mica. It's got every option I want and more.
The dealer has come down to $31,980 without me even talking price yet. Since I'm up here in Anchorage, one of my best friends is going to test drive it for me tomorrow. If he says it's great, I'm going to buy.
Should I try to push the dealer down further on price? He's already knocked $5000 off the sticker price.
What do you think?
Thanks,
JP

You can search for more advice, but my general rules are:

1. Never negotiate down from sticker. Negotiate from invoice price. Get the invoice price, decide what you're comfortable with as a drive-out price, then negotiate until you either have a deal or walk away.

2. Never be afraid to walk away -- you can always find another 4Runner.

3. If you plan to trade in another vehicle, negotiate that part separately from the purchase.

4. Be confident. The dealer needs you a lot more than you need them.

And be sure to read this thread.

Agreed. I'd add that you need to find out what invoice price is from Edmunds or KBB. Don't ever say the words "invoice price" to a dealer, or you'll get into a debate about the definition of "invoice". Always negotiate with an actual dollar figure.

That said, I think $5000 off of MSRP is in the ballpark. Based on other posts, you should be able to get near invoice (as defined on Edmunds or KBB) before subtracting any cash rebates.

Thanks.
The invoice price for this truck with the same options, according to Edmunds is $33251.
They've offered it to me for $31980.

Someone on another thread said that recently Toyota issued a $2000 rebate for this 2006 truck. That was for the California region. How can I find out if there is a current rebate for the Pacific Northwest region?

I looked on Automotive.com
It said current rebate on the 2006 4Runner is $1000 "rebate cash" and $1500 "max rebate cash"
What does that mean?

The dealer's internet price is $33481.
He told me to "take $1500 more off the price above from Toyota if you like"

I think that means he already gave me the $1500 "max cash rebate"
Does that sound correct?

Go here and put in your zip code. (95112 is a NorCal zip.) It'll give you the current rebate prices.

Take another $1500 off "if you like" sounds to me they haven't given the rebate yet and if you didn't inquire about or been aware of it, they would've made $1500 more.

Thanks Uneek.
I went to that site (buyatoyota.com).
For the 2006 4Runner at the dealer's zip code it says the current special offer is "2.9% APR up to 60 months or $1500 Customer Cash"

So this dealer is offering the truck for their "internet price'" of $33481 less the $1500 rebate, or $31980.

The Edmund's calculation for the invoice price is just about the same as what they're asking before the rebate (invoice=$33251).

So, does $31980 sound like a good deal?
I don't think the dealer has a lot more profit to cut out for me at this price.
What do you think?
Thanks, JP
