While working overseas in the desert for a few years I was introduced to Toyota 4x4s when my company gave me a 1985 land cruiser. That was one tough truck! I racked up many road and way way off road/sand dune miles in that. When I returned to the states I decided that I would one day buy a toyota 4x4.

This last weekend I came across a 94 4runner, 5spd, 3.0l one owner, with 135k miles. The body and interior are in excellent condition. Along with the keys, I was given a 2" thick binder full of service records...in chronological order (yes!). All of the regular stuff like timing belt/water pump etc seems to be in order.

There are two issues that I have noticed so far.
1)the rear is lower than the front, i assume this can be taken care of with new springs/shocks, no problem

2) when driving hot or cold there seems to be a stumble around 2000 rpm. This is only while driving, no stumble is present when reving the engine parked. If i push the gas more i can power through the stumbles but they are still there.

I have already started working on the car, I have replaced the plugs, wires, cap and rotor. I have changed the fluid in front (old fluid was almost like new) and rear diffs(old fluid was very dirty with some metal), transfer case(fluid ok), and transmission (pretty dirty). I also lubed up the chassis including the driveline.

Does anyone have any ideals about the stumbling? Anyone have a similar issue?

My 92 had SEVERE stumble at around the same RPM. I did all of the things you mentioned, and more, to no avail. Eventually, it turned out to be the fuel pump. There is no telling how long the 4rujnner had gone without the fuel filter being changed. I bought it with 145,000 on the clock. Of course, there are a number of things that can cause your symptoms. You might first pull the engine codes from the Check Engine light and see if you get any. Even tho my fuel pump turned out to be the culprit,, I was getting an O2 sensor code from the ECU. I suppose the engine was running too lean.

Check here for a list of codes:

And , yes, 2nd Generation 4runners are notorious for rear sag. Spring spacers or new springs are a common fix. I did put new, gas shocks on mine and it helped a bit.

Yes was the fuel filter replaced in you records try that first and yes the "sag" is comman and can be fixed with new shocks and coils.

Sounds nice and taken care of.

Yes the fuel filter was replaced about a year ago (4k ago). I think I have found the problem. the cam is off, i found the timing belt loose, the idler pulley has a nearly frozen bearing, and the tensioner is shot....I am suprised it was still running! I'll post back later when i get it resolved.

I am new too. Just bought a 1994 4runner v6 with 133k miles and so far so good.

I have owned it for a month and only needed to put a new exaust, and new brakes on it. I also found some 31' M/T with parnelli Jones dirt grip tires on e-bay almost new for really cheap. It really makes the truck look awesome!

I was really concerned about the rear sagging. After a lot of research it seems that people on this forum like the Moog heavy duty springs. I am having them installed tomorrow (to cold to do it myself) and I will let you know what i think. The rear should only be 1" above stock.

Welcome to the forum.

Thanks to everyone. After I aligned the cam and put the timing belt on it felt like a whole new truck! I still am amazed that it was running at all, the cam was pretty far off.

Let me know how those springs go.
