I'm Thinking about a 07 IS350

Well, my moms RX needed service today and we had a 2006 IS250 loaner. The headroom was definitely an issue for me in the back. In the front, I was comfortable with the seat in the lowest position. Everything else about the car was great. This car was FUN!!!!!!! :D Now I see what you are talking about with the tach as well. The only thing is when we pulled up next to a 4Runner, I felt like a little insect.

Next time tell them you want a 350!

Well, i am not sure that IS has taken over the segment from BMW. From 99% of comparisons that i have read, BMW has come out on top. Even if you could disable VDIM (you can do it now too BTW), i doubt that IS would beat BMW in handling and braking. BMW has always been known as a "driver's car." Remember, in all the reviews, IS has been criticized for it's numb electric steering & overall handling feel. It is Lexus best handler for sure, but has not overtaken BMW in this area. Performance is more than just straight line acceleration. If you look at most magazine specs, then you will see that BMW exceeded IS in every category not related to straight line acceleration...some of this you can blame on VDIM, but others you cannot (like braking).

Where IS is clearly better than BMW is luxury features and reliability. I agree with your statement about German cars. Has there been problems with the new BMW 3-series?? I have not looked into this.

Is Lexus really coming out with an OFF switch for IS?? I must have missed this on Clublexus. Can you show me the link?? It's funny because Lexus was very adamant about not offering this OFF switch because they claim that VDIM in IS was aggressive enough.

As for the G35, i do not think that you would like it because there is quite a bit of road noise. My partner at work has one...a 2006 model. It's fairly noisy on anything but smooth pavement.

And Mark Levinson is truly amazing!

As for not buying German cars, i agree partially. Reliability has not been good in general. As for politics, at least, BMW is not French!:D And didn't Japan kill many Americans at Pearl Harbor and beyond in WWII?? Germans have been supporter of US policy until the past few years. And even now, they are not that anti-American as most European countries. If BMW was French, then i would completely agree with you.

Now, don't get me wrong...if i were to buy a sports sedan today under $45K, then i would pick IS for sure. However, i just want to provide some balance into your discussion.

Thai,

I just took the 350 for a test ride over the weekend. All I can say is "What an Amazing Car"!

Well, enough chit-chat, WHEN ARE YOU GONNA BUY ONE?!! Damn, i am stuck with my little Corolla while you're zooming around with 306 horses!:(

Haha, so this is where Koz has been spending all his time...In this thread and out test driving the IS

Lookin' for a fresh cut of BEEF are ya?

Funny I stumbled upon this thread, as I have been contemplating adding a second ride the garage in the next year or two. A close friend of mine just leased an '06 S4 and I would love for nothing more than to see the look on his face when I can keep up in a V6 powered Lexus that costs ~$20k less... :D

If you don't mind me asking, how much are you looking to spend for the IS?

Koz, here is your future challenger:

I will be ordering an 07 as soon as they will take my order, Sept.

Talk about PRIME cut! There are several 06 owners that are running them at the drag strip and running mid to high 13s and just over 100mph STOCK! With an exhaust they are running low to mid 13s. There is one guy with an exhaust, intake and pulled all the extra weight running 13.14 @ 105.84. He feels he can get in the 12s with a little more tweeking, good temp, and a set of drag radials. Look out M3!

My friend with the Hemi Heep also has a new convertible S4 and I was not impressed at all (slow and tiny), especially at the price he paid.

I will be getting most of the bells and whistles; Luxury package, nav/Mark Lev, and optional wheels (plus some little options). The retail should be about $45K.

Thai,

Why do you think BMW is putting twin turbos on the 3 series (which will only have 300 hp with the turbos)? Also, why are they putting a V8 in the M3?

Koz

With the turbo, you get 300 hp and 295 torque...so, it would make for a very interesting acceleration contest with the IS350. BMW 3-series is a bit better than IS in handling and braking...now, with the twin turbos, it can keep up in the straight line too. I believe that BMW did not boost the turbos more because of durability concerns. So, at the low boost from both turbos, it should be durable enough. However. as stated before, i am not a fan of force induction...so, i still prefer Lexus's way of making power.

M3 needs a V8 to keep up with competition. Audi S4 & RS4 have a V8. Mercedes has been using a big-bore V8 for it's C55 AMG (now dead)...Mercedes is going away from force induction. Caddy CTS-V is using the Corvette's engine. Most of M3's competition is making over 400 hp, and nearly as much in torque. 400/400 is the new standard for this elite class. It's really hard to make that much HP and Torque with a 6-cylinder.

Or are you implying that M3 is getting a V8 because of fear of IS350????:p Trust me, not many M3 owners are fearful of IS350. IS350 is an excellent car in it's class, among the C350, BMW 330i, Caddy CTS. It may even be a class leader. However, it will be embarrassed badly if it goes up against the M3s, Audi RS4s, or even MB C55 AMG. Remember, there is a lot more to a sports car than just straight line acceleration. And even then, you really have to drive the elites to really know the difference.

I'm NOT talking about modified cars racing on the track. I'm talking about a stock car with the average street mods like an intake and exhaust. With that said the IS350 has indeed embarrassed 330i. If you take a close look at comparing the 330i with the IS350 you will see that they are very close in handling but due to the IS's VDIM nanny it falls short. The 07 model will have a defeat switch and we will see if it makes a difference, like I think it will. On the street the IS will humiliate the 330i being able to get to 60 one full second faster. One full second is a LIFETIME!

I also ride a sport bike (180 RWHP ZX12R). Compared to the razor sharp 600s, 750s, and the two cylinder Italian exotics the ZX12R and the Hayabusa are fat pigs (100+ lbs heavier). Yet on the street that weight advantage doesn't mean much, with an experienced rider and 50 more HP. Its fun when the young guys start talking shit and after a road trip they say, "Gee I didn't think those bikes could handle so well". Now go out on a track and they will smoke me.

The minor handling and braking advantage the 330i has is not going to make up the power difference on the street. This is why they are putting on the turbos. I can remember BMW talking shit about using a turbos and saying they would never use them. Just like the 330i needing more to compete, apparently the M3 also needs more power.

In pure stock form the IS350 is very close to the M3 as far as power/acceleration and with minor mods its right there. I'm NOT talking about handling and braking (apples and oranges). It has to be very upsetting when you come out of a toll with a stock M3 and a Lexus IS is hanging right there with it.

Yes, the new 335i, G35, and IS for 07 will be very interesting/close, being that they will all have close to the same HP.

A couple thoughts:

-I thought I read somewhere that the new M3 is going to have a V8 and the 335i is the inline 6 turbo. I'll do some research...

-Didn't BMW used to equip early M series cars with turbos? Like the very first M3 that ever came out? Maybe it was an M5?

-The reason Lexus is attractive, to me at least, is: The reliability track record, the luxury associated with all Lexus' and the fact that now they have a car competing in a segment where it didn't really shine before - all around performance from a midsize sport sedan. The IS300 was a good start and the IS350 underlines the fact that they are breaking into the high performance sport sedan segment (That is, better than Altima, 330i, etc. but not an ultra performer like C65 AMG, RS4, etc.).

Bottom line is....I want one.

BMW M3 (stock) can easily run 4.8 seconds 0-60 and about 13.3 at 105.6 mph. And if you ever drive a M3 with SMG, you will understand that no automatic tranny will ever match SMG's superfast (but violent) shifts (80 ms) and launch control. Let's talk stock vs. stock. The gear ratios on the tranny (either 6-speed manual or SMG) are much more aggressive than Lexus auto. This is why M3 has been quite competitive with stronger competitors. The fact that M3 also has a true LSD in the rear also helps with taking off. If you talk about mods, then M3 will pull even further...and we're only talking straight line acceleration. M3 now has two companies making superchargers if you want to spend more $$. Apples to oranges in any performance category...M3 will beat IS350 over and over again anyday in any performance category. This is expected because of M3's aim and expensive cost (over $10K difference). So, it's no insult to IS350, but you should NOT compare the two at all.

There is a guy on M3forum.net (Matthew) who consistently ran his M3 under 13 in the 1/4 mile. He is a professional driver and took some stuff out of the M3 to decrease weight.

And, like i keep on telling you, there is more than acceleration that makes up a sports car. Therefore, you will not see BMW M division caring very much about Lexus IS350. The next M3 will have a V8 because of the competition in it's elite class (listed above), NOT because of IS350. If you want to talk about engineering prowess of IS350's engine, then please remember that M3 engine makes 333/262 power with only a 3.2L displacement. So, i doubt that BMW M division would have much trouble making more power than IS's engine with a 3.5L displacement.

Again, you're comparing apples to oranges. You cannot just focus on one thing and claim that it's a close competitor. I agree with you 100% that IS350 is more desirable than BMW 330i for me. However, with the new 335i, Lexus has a more formidable competitor in terms of raw power.

Do you have the Nurinberg's time for either BMW 330i or IS350?? This should give you an idea whether BMW's handling prowess can make up for it's lack of straight line acceleration.

Thai,

The only performance comparison between the M3 and the IS that I sited was in that if an IS has an intake/exhaust it can hang with a pure stock M3 in the 1/4 mile. My exact quote was
