Importing from Canada? 4000$ Fees+$$$?!

So here are the rules (that I read and know of)

1. Vehicule has to be permitted by the manifacture (Toyota) if it is 15 years and older

2. Vehicule cannot be (brand? wtf?) vehicule cannot be gravely accidented, as in, consindered or has been consindered not repairable. I must check with search engines using the VIN number to make sure it hasn't been crashed gravely. (Yes, I will take multiple VIN on the vehicule to make sure they match)

3. Vehicule will have to be modified to respect Canada's rules (like DayRunning Light and such....)

4. The vehicule shall be absent from all recalls (if it has been recalled, work must have been done) and I shall get a document to proove it if it has been recalled

I am almost thinking of going to the states, buy a cheap 4runner, frame swap, take some goodies, scrap the rest, come back here... lol anyone has info on this?! Thanks!

if it is newer than 15 years, you will have to pay the GST on it, which can be substantial.

You will need the title free and clear, and it will need to be mailed to the point of entry (canadian border crossing) 3 days prior to you bringing the vehicle across. This can be a real pain in the neck.

once it is imported, but prior to registration, you will need to have a form 1 completed, which includes daytime running lights, etc. You will also need to provide proof of exemption from outstanding recalls, etc. Toyota Canada (or maybe toyota USA--- I can't remember currently) should be able to send you a document to this effect, using the VIN number.

The price of 4runners in Canada has not yet caught up to the difference in exchange rates,
meaning it is more cost effective to buy a 4runner in Canada currently with Canadian currency than it is to buy a 4runner in the USA with converted canadian currency. The price should continue to rise on them here in Canada (as well as everything else).

I have imported vehicles to the USA when I lived there, and then imported vehicles back to Canada when I moved home. It was a giant headache importing vehicles to canada, and the expense kept growing and growing.


It is not a project that I would take part in currently, for the exchange rate difference alone.
