Not too bad. I got a max of 20.5 r/t when I commuted from DC to Central PA daily for a while. The key was new tires, new oil, new air filter, cruise control and 55 mph to 60 mph the whole time

I see that kind of mileage too when I'm not carrying heavy loads or driving in the mountains. But, my rig is all stock. I can get 21mpg driving 70-80 mph on the freeway. From what I understand, when you start putting on heavier wheels and tires, aftermarket bumpers, armor and such, your mileage starts to go down quick.

Those long and flat but gradually downhill stretches in Texas are the best for gas mileage. On my 2000 2WD SR5 I saw 25.8 mpg over a ~300 mile trip from the Dallas area to Houston at 75 mph for the most part. I did lose 600 feet of elevation total! The other way I saw around 22.5 mpg. My long term average (11,500 miles tracked) for all driving is 20.8 mpg, but I see it hit above 23 mpg fairly often on long highway stretches.

Here's the kicker...my wife drove the same just behind me in her 2000 2wd limited and averaged 18.4.

I drove on interstate the speed limit (mostly 75). Limited city driving. We stopped in Tomball and visited some friends at church.....other than that it was 99% hwy.

Oh crap. Already had my next set of tires picked out and was planning to jump to 265/75r16s, but was going to stick with All Terrains. Rethinking that now. Although part of the reduction in calculated mileage is attributable to the size difference in the tires, so in reality you are probably still swinging close to 19. How much of the reduction in mileage do you think is attributed to tire size vs mud tires?

I got 21.9 out of my 2000 Limited one day driving 2 lane roads on the Illinois prairie. Almost all 55mph speed limits, so naturally I had the cruise on 62. I find short trips kill mileage, even in the summer, because the auto trans shifts at way high RPMs until the engine is fully warm. Obviously, this happens with any vehicle, but the 4Runner seems to be one of the worse. Small price to pay though.

This is a snap shot of some of the fuel logs from a recent trip up and down the west coast. Some freeway, mountain and coastal driving as well as big city traffic thrown in too.

Vehicle was loaded down but nothing extreme. Truck is closing in on 400,000 with original engine and tranny.

What mileage is your 4Runner OP? I've got the same truck with 160k miles and my MPGs laugh at me. I usually average 12-14mpg. I'm running 265/75/16 with not much weight. Low gas mileage concerns me, and your makes me envy your gas mileage.

I get 16-19 out of my 2wd 1999 on our tiny UK roads, plenty of stop/start etc., can't expect too much more!

I just averaged 16.4 from Rocky Mount NC to Shalotte NC at 75 to 80 mph partially loaded

I got 360 miles out of one tank once, about 7 years ago, pure highway miles out in OK and TX and only going about 65.

I was getting quite the sphincter pucker waiting for the exit with the gas station.

Haven't repeated that performance since.

I average really good mpg on our trips from Nashville to Chicago. Used to break 20mpg all the time when i was stock. Heavier tires and a Lift and now not so much. Still pretty good though, about 18 MPG. Daily driving about 17 MPG.

Without doing he math for comparisons I was getting 21.5-22 with 245-70-16 tires driving 60-65 for about 40 mile trips with some short drives mixed in. Now on duratrac 265-75-16 I'm getting 18 with mostly short drives, less than 12 miles per trip.

I know these tires are 7% larger than the 245s with way more tread.
Was getting 340-360 to the tank, now with 265-75 I barely hit 300, math included

This one is a new to me (Saturday) with approx 165k. Don't know a ton about the vehicle except it is in immaculate condition and seems to have been well maintained according to Carfax
