Improving the glove compartment

Ok, so this isn't a major build/upgrade, and probably not even an issue for most people. :)

But I don't like the way the entire front of the glove compartment opens up. I tend to keep a lot of stuff in there and don't want it all spilling out when I open it:

So… I built a custom fitted tray that slides in and can hold a lot of small items. I made it out of 4mm sheets of Sintra PVC foam board. This material is sturdy yet easy to work with. The glove compartment interior is an odd shape with a couple of protrusions so it took a little trail and error to get the fit right:

In case anyone's interested, I usually get Sintra from this source:

I like the project and idea!
Thank you for the introduction to the product - I'd never heard of it. Is the specialty glue necessary or do you know of substitutes (that one might have around the house or available locally)?

i don't like 5th gen glove boxes, either. it's really quite annoying. made worse by the awkward shape.

Cool, looks good. Smart move on getting white, makes it easy to see in there. Black would make it harder to see little bits floating around on the bottom.

Interesting!

- Is the back panel for a cabin air filter?
- In the upper left corner it looks like optional power outlet in the round opening. What option goes in the rectangular opening? USB ports?
- Did a factory shelf or anything else need to be removed to create such a large opening?

1) cabin air filter, yeah.

2) some model years had usb ports. 2015s had nothing. assume the same for 2016. simply a blank plug that can be removed.

3) nope. that lovely cavern comes to us just like that.

Thanks. I'll try to post a drawing some time in the next few days. (Kind of have a lot going on right at the moment.)

The glue is Weld-on 16, which is usually available at hardware stores, plastics dealers, even some craft stores may have it.

It is also sold under the name "SciGrip" 16.

For what it's worth I actually like the glove box on the 5th gens. My old car (Subaru) had the bucket style glove compartment where the whole thing would swing down. When it was full stuff had a tendency to fall behind onto the hinge and then would get stuck there and prevent the box from closing. At least with the 5th gen style anything that falls out is obvious and easy to put back in.

Ordered

I know that I'm late to the party but I just ordered the center console organizer and tray. Great idea! :clap2:
