In Dash GPS Units? What are you using?

so my next upgrade is a double din Radio/GPS unit. I have a garmin and love it but it would nice to have it built in.

Looking at say Kenwood and Pioneer it looks like you have to pay extra to update the maps?

My Garmin is for life so I'm thinking maybe I don't want to pay the extra for the GPS? Which ones can be updated for free and I really like the Garmin maps.

I don't want it to run my Iphone map as if I'm in an area where I can't get phone service it won't work right? No real GPS.

I have a Pioneer running Android Auto. In Google maps under settings you can download maps of whatever areas you want. I probably have about 3gb of maps saved to my phone and anytime I'm going to a new area I download a map over WiFi. Google maps runs seamlessly between the online and offline maps when service is spotty and they have almost all the forest service roads on there.

Bingo. So if you download offline maps. You can track your self without phone service
