In-dash Nav suggestions for 02' 4runner limited?

Hi everyone,

I recently purchased a 2002 4runner and would like an in-dash navigation unit for it. Does anyone else with a similar vehicle have any suggestions on what units to look for? Thanks..

I have a 99 with the Eclipse AVN5500. I like it, but I'm thinking about upgrading to the 6600 or 6610 to get dual DVD and Serius Traffic.

I'm not sure if all of the aftermarket Nav units do this, but the Eclipse tilts so you can see it easier while the car is on then goes back flat when turned off.

I've heard some good things about the Pioneer AVIC-Z2. But, I have not used it. I'm hoping you get some other replies with feedback on the Pioneer and other units.

There may be something better, but I think you would be happy with the Eclipse.

The first thing you should do is decide what features you want and what your budget is.

It looks like the Pioneer units support XM and Sirius, but the Eclipse only supports Sirius. I have used both, and it seemed to me like Sirius had more stations that I liked, but the XM stations seemed to be better. So, I personally didn't think one was better than the other.

The Z2 and 6600/6610 units support the satellite traffic updates (there is an extra monthly charge).

It looks like the Z2 has a hard drive. I guess you only load the Navigation DVD once, which leaves the DVD open for playing CD's, Movies, etc. Usually the hard drive models allow you to rip CS's, so you don't need a CD changer.

The main difference between the 5500 and 6500 series Eclipse is the satellite traffic updates and the dual DVD player. So with the 5500, you can use Navigation or watch a DVD movie, but you can't do both.

I think all of them have iPod support, which does me no good since I use a Zune player.

The big question would be which Navigation is the best. I am probably going to stick with the Eclipse, since I know I like it, but I have no idea how good the Pioneer is. I like the Eclipse better than my previous Nav system which was Alpine.

i just installed the kenwood dnx7100 works great sounds great and it tilts up so you can see it well from the drivers seat. theirs a thread on that unit in the audio section. on the second page i posted pics of it installed in my 2002

alaskanboi, I like the custom sub! I'm thinking about doing something similar.

I can run down to the place I got it done and see if they still have the mold... i paid a pretty penny to make it look as clean, so hopefully my efforts will pay off to others!

The only problem I see with the Kenwood DNX7100 is that there doesn't seem to be a preamp output for subs. Personally, I like to run subs so that is something I would look for. I'm not an expert, so I don't know, but maybe you could just add a crossover and it would do the same thing.

rj their is a preout for subs rear and front speakers. ill be installing my sub as soon as i figure out how to get a sub to fit in the storage compartment

The Crutchfield site must be wrong about the 7100. It says there are preouts, but no sub preouts.

I also have the D2 for almost a year now and love it, and ALSO want a D3 now. Do yourself a favor and spend some time reading forums (avic411.com) and REALLY get the scoop on them. You may find you like Kenwood or Alpine more than Pioneer. Good luck.

I have the AVIC N1 and I am very happy about it. Like what the guy said, check avic411.com. You can find a wealth of info on that site, and I'm also a member of that site too. From what my installer told me, and from what I read in the forums in avic411.com, the D3 is a very good unit compared to its predecessor the D2. You can now bypass the unit to be able to change addresses while driving and other things which will not be mentioned: . The Z2 is nice since it has a harddrive where it can rip your cds and store it in its hard disk. The only downside is that it is too expensive, $2000+ for the unit alone.
