At the beginning of February I was fortunate enough to share my first extended offroad/camping trip in my new 4runner with my father, one of his best friends Charles and his wife.
I've known Charles all my life albeit not closely in my adult years, but he was the same jolly, happy guy I knew when I was a kid... with less hair.
It was an awesome trip, scary desolate (Big Bend Ranch State Park), dusty, windy, surprisingly cold at times, but exilerating.
My dad had his built out F150 and Charles and his wife were in a new Tundra with RTT and campershell covering a full kitchen, as well as dressing area, toilet, storage, etc. All built out by his wife... it was quite impressive.
Charles and my dad have always been primitive survivalist types (my dad keeps the cat food cans I try to throw out at my house to make stoves out of) and it was odd seeing both of them in these rigs, that for them were like 5 star hotels.
For me, it was roughing it... with my 15 gallon roof top water storage, full kitchen setup, prolly enough food for at least a month, 4 inch air/foam bedding in the 4runner, portable toilet /w changing room, etc..... I'm suprised I survived.
We spent the time going from one place to another, seeing the grandiose views, eating too much of what Charles wife kept making us (I really hardly used any of my own food) and shootin' the shit.
It was great as I knew that I may not get to do something like this with my dad ever again and the added benefit of reconnecting with Charles after so much time.
The trip ended with all of us going our seperate ways....
A couple of weeks later Charles was injured in the line of duty.
Yesterday, Friday the 27th of April 2018, Officer Charles Whites succumbed to those injuries.
May your best adventures be yet to come Charles
