Inclinometer Questions

Hello All! I just installed an inclinometer over the weekend and have some questions. Where or what did you wire the meter to? Also, I've read its mechanical, but this thing doesn't move no matter what I do to it? Is there any maintenenace that needs to be done to it? Thanks!

Possibly the most ignorant question ever, but is it in the locked state? There are the two knobs on the right hemisphere. The top adjustment knob will lock the gauges. Without looking at it, I believe turning it clockwise locks it, and counter unlocks it. There should be something on the face that says which way it is. On mine I hear a little click and know that it's dis/engaged.

I just recently purchased one and everything worked except for the the find adjust for the front to back. I pulled the whole cluster apart (super simple) and cleaned everything out. Found the fine adjust piece was a bit stuck so used some oil on the pivot points. Works perfectly now.
 
Thanks guys, looks like my nephew locked it when I wasn't looking and I didn't bother to check. This meter is all so new to me since the one in my FJ locks automatically when the vehicle is turned off.

I had to put one into my 89 and I found that there was an unused plug that the wires for the altimeter/inclinometer snapped into. However, I had to take the dash apart to do it.
Note: Its been a few years, but to take the dash off, there is a piece of duct work that needs to come off to get to one of the bolts. I never would have found it if I had not borrowed a FSM. If you want to clean up some stuff, than go ahead and take apart the dash and do a clean install, otherwise, wire it to something that turns on with the ignition or your other instrument lights.
 
Under the dash, behind the heater controls, there is a connector that the inclinometer hooks to. If I remember correctly, you disconnect the lights for the heater controls, then connect the inclinometer harness, then the heater controls hook to the inclinometer harness.

I added one to my '86 back in '03, so I know the factory SR5 unit will wire in with no special wiring to a truck not originally equipped, but it's been some time since I did anything with the wiring as my current 4Runner had it installed.

So I'm running through this now. On the back of the inclinometer there is just one female connection for a harness to connect into. From your description it sounds as if you had both a female and a male connection thus having this running in series. By any chance was there a female connector right off the light, then some adapter that hooked it up this way? I've pulled the duct work out for the air control, and have followed the wiring harness but don't see any extra male connection lying around for the clinometer. Again I realize you said this was a while ago that you did this, so any info is a big help. I'm debating making a harness at this point, but would like for that to be a last resort. thanks.
 
Anyone happen to have pics? Of install/ wiring/ where it goes on dash? I assume in the middle of the dash pad but I've never seen one installed before and tempted to get one.

Wiring isn't critical, it's just for the backlight, not operation.

There's four studs out of the mount. The clinometer connects to the mount by two screws. You'll see other posts here that talk about how to mount it. Gotta pull the dash, which isn't as bad as it sounds, again look for posts here. FSM was handy with pics.

As far as the wiring I understand it's just for the lighting, but was hoping to get it working fully. I know it's just aesthetics at that point, but still a nice to have. Your dash pad looks nice and has the potential to be crack free....super jealous.
 
There should be a spare plug behind the heater controls somewhere. There was one on my 84 and it did't have the Inclinometer. I pulled it and dash out of my 87 and put in my 84 and had no problems
 
my question is...

where can I find a red one? Definitely a sick feature, hell if anyone stumbles across a red lemme know, please!

I am new to this. Do you happen to have a link that shows how to bolt it to the dash? Or how to take the dash apart without destroying the vehicle? Thank you

It's pretty straight forward. I couldn't find the plug for the light so I tapped another 12v source, so it doesn't dim with the rest of the interior lights. Not that I dim them anyway.

He can tap into the cigarette lighter ring, that is a dimmable source, thats how I did it, its right below the inclinometer.
