I vote for incompetence.....chaps my ass when this happens, and I KNOW it wasn't me. 25 nm is less than 20 ftlbs. What the eff is so difficult about this?

Anyway, ordered the aluminum replacement from rock auto, almost 30$ cheaper than toyota. It will accept a standard oil filter socket or the goofy one that fits the original plastic. OilFilterCap.jpg

I'm leaning towards design flaw and incompetence. That plastic housing just can't handle the heat cycles and ham-fisted mechanics.

Yea maybe after 10-20 years… his truck is 2 years old. Incompetence.

I’ve noticed pretty much as soon as the housing stops moving you are already at torque spec. No extra ‘oomphs’ needed.

Yeah, you're crushing an o-ring for the seal, it doesn't have to be 100 lb-ft of torque, hand tight should be adequate.
