Info on these TRD wheels

I know I'm going against the grain here, but I would have no qualms with 285s on a 7". I've used and abused multiple sets of 285s and 315s on 7" rims without issue. Balancing, alignment was never an issue and I actually enjoyed the sidewall protection of the rim.

That being said I was happy to get them on a 7.5", but would I run it again? Absolutely.

For someone that is new to off-roading, what, if any, is the issue with running 285s on 7" wheels? I've done enough research to know that the minimum "required" width for 285 tires is 7.5", but several people I've spoken to say it's not really a big deal. Is it more an aesthetic thing with bulging tires? Bottom line, I love the black TRD wheels, and I want to put them on the rig I'm planning on building. For those that have 285 wheels on 7" wheels, please feel free to post some pics!

Simply put, there is not an issue with 285s on a 7" rim. If that's the setup you want to run you are never going to run into a problem as far as I'm concerned. And aesthetically I like how 285s and 315s look on a 7" or 7.5"

Exactly.

I've ran those combos multiple times and never had an issue. I'm thinking of running a 255 this time though.

TOYOTA, please release these wheels in black so I can buy them!

Just for my own curiosities sake, would you mind posting/PM'ing some pics of your 285 and 7" wheel combo, if you guys got them? I would greatly appreciate it!

Well, I have called and emailed to a bunch of different TRD parts dealers. What I have gathered is that Toyota has 650 of these black wheels locked up somewhere and they have no plans on releasing them anytime soon. It could be anywhere from 6 months to 2 years before they allow dealers to just sell them to joe blow customer after the release of the TRD PRO 4runner. The TRD PRO 4 runner will have them. Even if I had the VIN of a TRD PRO 4runner, they would not sell me the black version. What a pain in the ass!

However, the gray version seems to be in stock at most places. I'm tempted to just buy the gray version and change the color to black. What color change process is the best in terms of looks and durability. Paint, Plasti-dip, powdercoat, anything else? What about the center cap? Can't buy the black cap either.

I was told by a power coating shop that aluminum wheels are hard to do and easy to screw up. Oh yeah, they wouldn't cover the cost if they did screw them up, and this is a very reputable shop that I have used many times.

So, there is the dilemma. Should I buy the grey version and change them to black and the best way to go about it?

The grey ones are actually pretty dark, and they look great with the black paint in my opinion. Just plastidip them if you really feel the need, and when you get tired of black on black take the plastidip off.

Where did you get the wheels from and how much? If you don't mind me asking. Also don't they have two color available? I noticed yours is like a gunmetal color?

As promised, here are the wheels installed (finally!):

Wheels look great man, glad to see them on a black 4R, too! Makes my decision a bit easier. I'm not a big fan of black on black so I've been looking at grey/gunmetal wheels. Really digging these. Also, truck looks better without the bulky looking running boards. I have the MetalTech Sliders, work great as steps and much lower profile than OEM running boards, and of course the added protection.

Thanks! I will be ordering the Shrockworks sliders with tread plates soon (where's the group buy!?). The problem is I do not know exactly what parts I need for the Trail rocker trim. I need to spend some more time in the 2014 rocker trim thread.

I can imagine what your 4Runner looks like (SR5, black) but where are your pics?

You're probably better off ordering the Shrockworks rocker trim (unless you particularly want the Toyota parts). They will be cheaper and look like they were made to fit the 2010-2013s better.

Here's a couple of pics from when I went to Ducmonsta 's house and installed everything. Not the best but it's all I have for the moment. Going to look significantly better with the gunmetal wheels.

It does..

I only saw gunmetal

Just got this email from parts dept at my dealer. Sent him the part number listed on the TRD site

"These wheels are no longer available from Toyota and according to the “ Parts Voice” website are not available from any dealers in the U.S. Sorry for the bad news."
