Info on these TRD wheels

I had my parts department call my local dealer to see what they'd sell us a set for (wholesale) and it was $190 a wheel. I stopped by in person and asked for the parts manager, I told him I was from the Audi dealer down the street and was quoted $190 a wheel but I wanted to stop in and offer them the sale if they were willing to price match as I'd rather spend money locally. I showed him a screen shot with the part number for the gray wheels (I hate black wheels, they look cheesey and make vehicles look cheap and generic - no offense to anybody on that bandwagon) and the cost. He started typing away and he's like it's my policy to not sell anything to anyone outside for cheaper than I'd sell it internally to the my own company. He showed me what dealer cost is and that selling at that price he'd be making almost $6 profit per wheel. He said the best he'd do is $25 per wheel over cost ($180) because thats what he'd sell them to the sales department for if they wanted to put them on a vehicle. I told him I understand and there's no hard feelings, that I wanted to at least come in and give them the opportunity to match it before just buying somewhere else and thanked him for his time.

So I bought them from that link which sucks because had they matched the price sales tax would have been less than shipping. Shipping was my one complaint, the website said like $75 for shipping with a disclaimer that large or heavy items may not calculate shipping correctly through the website, which of course, it didn't. They called the next day and said the actual shipping cost would be about $25 more which is what I had expected to pay from the beginning. My only real complaint so far, although minor, is that they used Fedex. According to the tracking number they were loaded into a truck Friday afternoon to be delivered and since they don't deliver Saturdays I won't get them until Monday. It's not a big deal but my wife's out of town so I went into work yesterday to work on my truck a bit and I have tires sitting there waiting for the wheels so it would have been ideal if they came yesterday. Plus the fact that I have Bliazzak snow tires on my stock wheels and considering it's well into the 70's here I'd like to get them off ASAP.

All in all though, so far so good. Their communication has been great, there were no long delays or anything , they shipped them out quickly. I don't know why their prices are so low it's barely realistic and well below wholesale but I'm going to start cross referencing parts pricesses with them for everything but the basic maintence items.

I did exactly what you did and talked to my local dealer with whom I buy a large amount of parts from with my business. I'd much rather give them the business whenever possible. He looked it up, smiled and said that is his exact cost price. Not expecting him to match it of course at that point, he said the best he will do is $171.00 each for me. I told him to go ahead and order them and I picked them up the next morning.

Which dealer was being honest? Who knows I guess. I do know that different regions have different parts costs. I did call Olathe Toyota to verify the price as well and shipping. Shipped to Georgia was $65.00 if my memory is correct.

I'm glad everything is working out for you! Speaking of Audi, a good friend of mine has a 2002 TT Roadster. I have been working on it for him fixing various electrical issues. My oh my are these a different type of animal!

This is exactly my number 2 place where I was planning to get my wheels if my number 1 didn't work out.

$161 per tire and $77 per set shipping is still the BEST price in town now, I think (except that other dealer who "mistakenly" did the $156 per tire and $43 per set shipping).

Personally I'm not a fan of gray either but I feel like their the lesser of two evils. They at least has a less aftermarket type of look. If they made these wheels in bronze I would have absolutely gone that route.

I don't care what anyone else does to their rig, but about 75% of this forum runs black wheels so I guess the bandwagon I'm on is large. Carry on. : )

I have to agree with you on this one. I like the black much more than the the gray but who really cares as long as your happy with your own choice no need to put someone else's choice down. Unless you think your better or are trying to prove something which is kind of ridiculous.

If I went into someone's build thread and said "your black wheels look like shit and your truck sucks, no offense" then you'd have a valid point. I wouldn't and haven't done that. This thread is about the TRD wheels, how could the opinion of a forum member about the these wheels, that they bought, be considered out of line? I realize the opinion of a stranger on the computer is very important but come on, your stretching a bit looking for something to cry about.

And what are you trying to accomplish by reinforcing that my bandwagon comment is accurate?

I ordered the BLACK ones today from Olathe and then called to confirm my order. When I spoke to the online parts department guy, he said they cancelled my order because "Toyota is no longer taking orders for these wheels until they can keep up with the demand for their new car sales". He said "the demand for these black wheels is too great right now, so they (Toyota) have simply stopped taking orders at this time."

So, I have two questions....

1. Does anyone know where I can get a set of black ones now?

2. Does anyone have a picture of a T4R with the gunmetal TRD PRO wheels on it? If so, can you post it?

I actually do not think there is a "stop sale" going on for these. I think Olathe is BS'ing you. I think they have an issue with the pricing in their system, and instead of fixing it, they are just pushing you around. If they are NOT going to sell them or they do not have stock of them for sale, they should take it off their website.

After speaking with Dustin at length about options, he confided in confidence that FN was creating their own version of the TRD . . . obviously it couldn't be exact to avoid intellectual property protection, however it would be close. The problem was that I needed a wheel now (back in Nov/14) and his new wheels wouldn't be released until the first half of '15.

Just got word from Dustin the wheels will be here next month, details now available, below is a picture of the FN version. He sent the photo but I'm waiting for the specs . . . I know it's 8", different center cap, conical seat lug, eliminated large mag-shank style lug nuts with the washer used on the OEM's.

I asked FN Wheels on FB for more details on the 8" wide wheel and here was the reply.

"Backspacing is 4.5". We absolutely had the 4Runner in mind with this wheel. No spacers are needed, and the specs are:

Diameter: 17"
Width: 8"
Offset: 0mm
Backspacing: 4.5"
Centerbore: 106mm Toyota hub centric

This gives you an ideal stance on the 4Runner, the proper wheel width for 285mm tires (8" wheel width is also perfect for OEM sized 265/70R17 tires), plenty of upper control arm clearance and brake clearance is also excellent.

Thanks for the great info. It seemed a bit weird to me and the first thing the parts guy at Olathe said was "we have the gunmetal TRD Pro wheels available right now". At any rate, I ordered a set this morning from one of the links you provided, so we'll see what happens.

I'd be totally puzzled if Toyota/TRD is not going after FN Wheels once/when these wheels are released unless Toyota/TRD is stupid enough to not even have a design patent on these. It will definitely pass the “ordinary observer test” as an obvious design patent infringement if Toyota/TRD pursue it.

I ran a quick search for design patents assigned to Toyota and didn't see anything for this version of the TRD wheels. Design patent applications aren't public until they're issued, so there is a possibility they have an application pending that could later issue. But I'd say this is unlikely because it looks like these wheels were released several years ago, about 50% of design applications issue within 12 months, and about 99% of design applications issue within 36 months.

So, about releasing those wheels...
