Initial fire up procedure

Folks, have the reman engine/trans bolted in and all connected up.

Is there a trick to priming the fuel system? I've cranked it a bit, almost as much as i prefer without it firing. The whole system was empty during the rebuild.

my only idea is to suck some fuel from the return line in the engine bay with my vacuum evacuator, to fill the system.

Minute or two of cranking i would have assumed the fuel pump did the trick, but no. Any experience in firing a new engine?

Of course i could have one of the N-teenth electrical connections off.

The fuel pump does not prime on the 3rd gen. It only runs with the key in the START position or when the engine is running (the ECU turns the pump off if the engine stalls, even with the key in the ON position).

That said, the fuel system will fill up pretty darn quickly since it is a return-type system. Like a few seconds quick. If you have everything plugged in, it should start much quicker than that (and also, don't feel bad about a minute of cranking - it is good to get oil to all the engine parts before firing the engine).

I'd suspect something isn't hooked up right (wiring plug, etc.).

A tip from marine engines that are unused for long periods. Spin the engine without letting it start until you have oil well circulating.
Then connect fuel and spark. Just be careful not to spill fuel. An electric disconnect of ignition and fuel pump would probably be easiest. Then reconnect and fire away.
Small marine diesel engines have a lever that pushes on exhaust valve to elminate compression to prevent start. Some models can accumulate many tens of thousands of hours running time before valve and piston ring maintenance.

No start -

I a going through the FMS manual's procedure, stopped at crankshaft position sensor test before the thundershowers.

HAve a wet return line so fuel is being moved. Timing light indicates no spark.

Where TF is the "IGNITOR" ? that big sucka with an epoxy top and a 12 or 16- pin connector sitting on pass wheel well?

Yes, right behind/below the airbox. That is what drives the ignition coils based on a signal from the ECU.
