Inner fender liner mod/armor ??

Hey guys,

Was driving around and saw these group of jeeps with some beefy tires. As i looked at them they had these nice "inner fender" alluminum plates with cool designs ( pictures below from google) in their wheel well. Our 4runners have little plastic flappy ones (lol). Was wondering if anyone thought of fabricating something or has made one. Doesnt seem to hard maybe ill look into it. Would offer some protection?[emoji849]Would mainly be pure cosmetic looks; a backgroud for our cool lifts/suspensions.[emoji4]

I haven't seen a tubbed fender liner kit for sale, but the one's I have seen are custom jobs with aluminum (see Walt's Taco of TAV). There's also RAD Rubber's replacement engine splash guards. These are a lot tougher than the factory version, and snap right into the stock location. If I ever tear mine, I'll probably go with a set of these...slightly tore one when installing new UCA's last week, but its still holding on.

Hmm interesting these seem pretty nice but stock looking. Will look around and see if i can get an alluminum one fabbed. Would look nice behind the uca and shocks.

I see this causing problems down the road. Body on frame, body flexes different from the frame. You've now tied the thin sheet metal inner fenders into the solid frame with heavy gauge aluminum. Wrangler inner fenders are not tied into the frame, only the body which is why they work without issue. I'd keep a real close eye on the bolt holes on the inner fenders as well as the inner fenders them selves. Bunch of stress there that they were never designed to take.

The only reason us Jeep guys do this is because many of the tubed flat fenders out there leave you no good way to remount the plastic ones. These just go in there to keep mud and stuff out of the engine bay in their absence. It's not really an upgrade or a protection thing. They are pretty though!

There's a good reason Toyota used flexible splash guards. Notice that the Jeep ones aren't attached to the frame.

I dont have them yet, they just made them. Havent heard back yet, but will ask. Couple people did comment on the movement of the frame and bondy and they responded back with they use bushings to allow for minor movement. Will get some more answers for you guys!

These look good. Not bad for the price. The 1/8" rubber sheet material is not cheap. Ready made to fit for around $50 is a good price.

I've made these for the back wheel wells to protect the ICON remote reservoir and close the gap between the body and the frame that's wide open in the stock wheel well. I used 1/4" rubber sheeting I found in a 4 foot square piece on Amazon.

The back wheel wells were fairly easy. The front will be a bit harder to cut to fit. Here are photos of the liner. The first photo is the finished liner, in two pieces sharing a screw above the shock. The 3rd photo shows the OEM gap that occurs between the body and frame inside the wheel well. I pre-drilled and screwed to the pinch weld of the body. SS screws and fender washers. The rubber is stiff enough to just hang over the frame and close the gap. No screws on the frame except where the reservoir hose is mounted. The 2nd photo is looking up at a 2nd piece I put underneath to cover the ICON remote reservoir. The rubber is just curled up around the reservoir without anchors at the top. the first photo shows where it folds back to allow access to the reservoir adjustment knob. These work great out on rugged 4x4 trails.

Only if you drive through mud. If you drive through mud everything collects mud. :evil:
These stay fairly clean. I power wash the undercarriage after off roading and I always rinse the wheel wells. :washing:

I have not done wheel well mods yet, but my metal thing with all the cutouts, semi-clear see thru plates, with an additional rack on top does seem to gather mud, dust or dirt everywhere whenever it sees the non paved roads and trails.
