Inner Tie Rod replacement

Unfortunately it appears that the passenger side inner tie rod on my 2007 4runner 2wd is making noise so needs replacement. I could not find a good writeup for 4th gen but found one for the 3rd gen 4runner.

1. I assume the procedure is similar to the 4th gen ?

2. Does anyone know correct tie rod adapter size to remove the inner tie rod if I decide to purchase a removal tool ?

its very similar. if your boots are still intact/ its still relatively weather tight then you souldnt need a removal tool, i got mine off with channel locks and probably didnt even need those. the only thing that really keeps them on tight is the staked washer.

I bought the inner tie rod end tool from Harbor Freight. It had the right size adapter, but the pipe end that attaches to the crow foot was too short, so I couldn't use it. I ended up using a pipe wrench and it worked fine.

The job is real easy to do. I did mine about 3 or 4 weeks ago. Each side took about 20-30 minutes for my first time doing it.

They said assorted punches, but all you need is a thin flat head screw driver and a little thicker screw driver you can hit with a hammer to bend a clip.

You really only need the thicker screw driver to hit, the thin one is optional if the boot won't come off the inner tie rod easily. Little force and mine came off fine.

Make sure to replace you outers at the same time, since you will have everything apart already. I just used a big pair of vice grips on mine. It was super easy to get off.
