Hey Im new here, I sold my Raptor before coming to Antarctica. So I'm looking to get something similar but different and since the 4Runner is one of the few SUVs on the street still with some off-road street cred. So let hear what are pros and con of each and what are some must have features. BTW it will be used for off-roading.

There are many pros and cons to each model. Each will offer good off roading ability with the trail models from each generation being a little bit better offroad. I am posting quick because many will start offering their opinion instead of fact but the fact is both are good vehicles. There are many threads in each generation subforum stating all the good things about each model. Both are good and I would test drive both yourself and then make a decision.

1st Question: Do you "need" a V8?

That is the problem I am facing. I know I am good enough to not need a V8 to get me out of bad situations but I'm very used to having my right foot as a back up plan. BTW this is all speaking for off-road if I was just going to mall brawl it I wouldn't care. Is the V-6 down that much power to the V-8?

The HP is about the same, but, of course the V8 has more torque and it's available a lot earlier in the power band. The V6 is no slouch but you may find yourself digging a little deeper with your right foot from time to time.

Test drive both, one or the other is bound to jump at you as the one.

The 2UZ is hard to argue against, and is what ultimately swayed me to my 3rd 4th gen instead of a 5th gen TE.

I traded a 4th Gen V8 Limited for a 5th SR5 and didn't regret it at all. After an unfortunate mid-intersection rendezvous with another motorist incapable of distinguishing stop from go, I got another 5th Gen (aTE this time). As much as I liked the SR5, I like the TE even more and could probably also be equally happy with a 5th Limited.

What I miss about the 4th Gen: the V8 torque and that is all. Although, while I miss it, it isn't that big of a deal.

What I like about the 5th Gen: usable space and overall comfort (esp 2nd row), climate control knobs and dash layout, off road handling, body styling (some will howl at this). The V6 has been more than ample for me (having said that, I don't tow).

Inquires like yours are more than reasonable, but sometimes stir up a "mine is better" pissing match here. I offer my opinion only because I have owned three 4Runners (a 4th and two 5ths).

The 4th gen v8 blew me away so i went with it. No doubt or hesitation.

The 5th gen Trail has a much different look than anything else out there on the market IMO. Very unique and not many seen on the road.

Like others have said...... You need to drive'em all thoroughly and go with what feels best to you. The subtleties of each can make it or break it for you. Lots of variables to consider.

Have fun choosing. Either way, you win.

What I'm worried about is once I lift it and go to bigger tires like 33s or 35s that its not going to kill the V-6.

I dont plan on towing but I like Ive said before I do plan on off-roading so I worry about bigger tires killing the V-6.

Space was the biggest complaint about my Raptor. I had an Scab and I had to carry a lot of my gear in the bed. This is also why I decided to pass on the JK Unlimited while they added 2 doors it doesnt really increase usable space.

Lots of us run 33s without much issue. It will affect mileage and acceleration, but for me it has been negligible. Because it is a lifted off road vehicle, I don't think I'd drive it any faster even if I could. The new V6 is a workhorse.

It was kind of fun surprising people with the V8 when I'd punch it off the line. That thing can boogie through the quarter mile pretty well for an SUV.

This has been debated ad nauseum on the 5G Forum. If you can find it, the most informative post I've read was put up by Harper7, who has owned, modded, and wrenched the bejesus out of them all.

You can evidently afford either, so my question is; why on earth would anyone buy a used 4R when they can buy new? Performance? It's very close already, but this summer will bring a 5G TRD S/C.

its not a matter of new or used its matter of best over all bang for the buck. Its like comparing a TJ Rubicon to JK Rubicon. The TJ has the 4.0L its an workhorse of an enigne and the TJ platform itself is a very proven platform but the JK has a **** motor but the JK platform is light years ahead of the TJ.
