inputting into 04 Nav while moving

Does anyone know how to change/rewire the NAV system so that I will be able to use it/type on it while the car is moving? Right now it greys out most of the keys once the vehicle starts moving.
I have a friend with an Acura MDX and he says he can change things on his NAV system while driving.

Hey! This is my first post on this site as I just picked up my new 2004 Limited 4Runner last weekend. It came with the factory navigation system, and I am able to input information while the vehicle is moving. I am not sure why you are not able to do so. Anyway, maybe it is a faulty unit?

I have an '04 LTD w/ Nav and I can't input new destinations while moving. I can change some of the POIs and some other stuff like rerouting. I think you'll find that yours behaves the same way.

The NAV system probably has a wire that is connected to the shifter so it only lets you use it when in park. I don't know because I don't have the NAV. Other ways to tell if you're not moving include a wire to the e-brake. You could just move these wires from the original spots to a 12v switched wire like the cig lighter. This should fool the system.

I was just looking this over in the wiring manuals last nite. IIRC, the nav system has inputs from the parking break and the gear shift position. I belive they toggle between GROUND and FLOAT.

In any case, you should confirm the wiring BEFORE you attach any wire to either GROUND or 12V. Otherwise you may produce a short circuit and the magic black smoke could escape from your Navigation system.

It uses the speed sensor AND GPS sensor (you would have to bypass both).. when the speed goes above 2mph it greys out many of the options on the NAV to prevent you from looking/searching for a new location while you are suppose to be driving. When you come to a stop (or below 2mph) they buttons "un-grey" Your "hot key/saved" locations are always available. Yes, this is a pain, since most of the time it is my passenger that wants to play with the nav unit. You can, however still do a lot while moving. for example, you can still tap on any POI and get information, you can also look ahead to upcoming exits on the freeway to see what services are available, as well as switching to a preview map of any upcoming exit.
