Installed OME 891's (info and suggestions)

I have been needing to do something about the rear springs for a while. I've got a '97 Limited with ~170K. I tow a trailer and race car with the truck and even with the load leveling airbags, have had the rear squat a whole lot.

The whole install took less than 2 hours with pneumatic tools. It would have been less if I hadn't transferred the airbags to the new springs. Those were a PITA to remove from the old springs. Also, since the OME's were taller, I had to unbolt a few more things to install them after I removed the stock springs.

The springs a good bit taller. When measured, they were about 2" taller than the stockers.

They are quite a bit firmer also so I had to bring the axle down a bit more by unbolting the panhard bar.

I'm pretty happy with it. It wasn't really a hard install, just had to do things after realizing it wouldn't work like the time I removed the stock springs for the load leveling airbag install. Here are suggestions to knock off about 20-30 minutes:

1. Go ahead and unbolt the rear sway bar and panhard bar after you unbolt and disconnect the bottom bolt of the shocks.

2. If you can get a friend to help, it'll save a little bit of time as I realized a 3rd hand would have been helpful at times when I was trying to get the panhard bar and sway bars rebolted on.

3. While doing #2 (the previous item, not while in the restroom), it'll be most beneficial to have that person on the floor jack helping to align the panhard bar and the sway bar mounts to make the reattachment easier. I had to get up and work the jack 2 or 3 times to get things to align right.

4. Be careful of the brake line that is connected from the frame to the diff. When you unhook the panhard and the sway, the axle will drop a little bit and pull on this line. Be careful not to damage it.

5. I found it also easier to sometimes jack up on the opposite side of the axle to drop down side I was working on a little more. This helped the spring get into place.

If I had to do this over again, I think I could do it in about 1-1.5 hours. I had to go back in the shop a few times for tools and things.

I've got a track event this coming weekend so I'll be towing with it for the first time. I'll take a pic with the trailer hooked and loaded if you all would like.

The final product:

Like a dumba$$, I started to jack the truck up and then thought, "crap, I should have taken a before pic." Sorry.... but, here is a pic of the trailer from about a month ago and you can kind of see how the back end of the truck was.

The rear levels prior to the install were a little off. 35.5 and 36". After the install and a 10 minute drive around, I now have 38 1/8" on each side.

Looking good man! I sort of laughed when you were tripping on how the springs were 2" longer. ;) Just cause I installed some FZJ80 coils and they are about 5-6" longer! Lots of fun to squeeze those puppies in.

However I am thinking about switching to go to 890/891's because the FZJ80 coils are a little tall right now. How is the ride with the OME's? Is it pretty noticible on how the spring rate is higher?

Thanks for the suggestions, I am about to put mine in within the next few days, this will help us out a lot.

Nice work on the install. Should have a nice tow vehicle now.

A little advice for those that decide to install these in the future - 891's shouldn't require disconnecting the panhard bar. Just disconnect the sway bar endlinks, lower shock mounts, and that 12mm brake bracket screw (the lower one that just holds the steel cable). Then with the vehicle on jack stands, lift the axle on one side until the opposite coil becomes lose and removeable. Do the same process for the other side. The passenger coil literally falls out and I loosely fit the right 890 into place. Just make sure not to over extend that single brake line in the middle.

I installed 890's a few days ago which are 1/2" taller free length than the 891's and did not remove panhard bar. The 890's are basically the same size spring with a lower spring rate than the 891's (190lb/in vs 210lb/in).

For all those who tow, next to the Tundra brake upgrade, rear spring replacement has been the best upgrade for me. It allows IMHO more control of one's trailer that before.

Can't wait to see the loaded pics.

Here are my 9.25 wrap LC coils next to my 891s.

Woah, those would have really been a PITA to install. I was thinking of those as an option so I'm glad I didn't get them. I wouldn't have needed them anyway. They would really have given the truck a lot of forward rake.

They really weren't difficult to get in.

The key to getting tall coils in is.
*remove lower shock mount
*remove swaybar end links
*remove one bolt out of the panhard bar (I usually do the axle end)
*remove the e-brake cable mount
*and most importantly, loosen all 8 control arm bolts

If you do this, The axle will fall to the ground.

Just reassemble with the new coils.
And re-torque the control arm bolts at the new ride height. This will also take the bind out out the bushings with the added lift.

***sometimes a ratchet strap may be needed to assist the axle over to reattach the PHB***

Side note: When lifting the front, loosen the upper control arms and re-torque at the new ride height.

Hooked the trailer up to it today. She still stays pretty flat. I'm pretty happy with it. I'll put the car on it Wednesday and we'll see then. She used to have a bit of rear sag without the trailer and a whole lot with. Now she's flat with the trailer.

Ya got to be happy with the results, even though I would think it would sink a little with time. How much tongue weight do you have there?

Hey. Sorry if this is from over 5 years ago but I do have a question or two.

I have a guy near me selling his 891s and 883's for the front.

I assume you did a diff drop?
Did you have to worry about the brake lines?

Also, how is the ride Quality without the trailer?

My wife and I are building up our runner as an "expedition" rig slowly but surely and this deal on CL is dang good.

Any input will be appreciated.

The ride quality is alright. It's stiffer than what was there stock, so speed bumps and things like that are a little harsher, but honestly, I think it's more fun. With the height, you'll have to get "up" into the truck rather than in, but again, I don't mind. When I first got the truck in '08, the suspension was pretty shot and the rear sagged quite a bit so I really can't compare to what the stock ride quality would be like.

I just install new shocks and added a full lift kit for my 02 4Runner. My rear end seems to b sagging. As I was reading through some post I came across people installing the 891's rear spring. My question is will this 891 rear spring help fix with my sagging? I got an 2.5 inch leveling lift.
