Installed: Rola low-profile mounts on 5th Gen

Does anyone who has done this have the mounts that come with this rack and want to get rid of?

I ended up doing the low profile mounts, and thought I saved the Rola mounts somewhere. After moving into new house I can't find them. I upgraded to Prinsu and am trying to give the Rola to my buddy with a Subaru Crosstrek.

Has anyone bought the extension for the Rola roof rack, installed it and then used the low profile mount kit to mount the rack to the factory roof rails?

It’ll fit as the rack is narrower than the side rails. Will it look good? I don’t think so... the regular size fits perfect with the lines of the vehicle, the extension would hang over the sunroof, and extend past the factory side rails. But to each their own.

I bought mine like two months ago on amazon for $134. I bet the COVID crisis jacked up the price.

Yup, I looked it up on google and everyone has it way up. I'll wait and see if it drops back down as I don't really need it yet. Have a cruise booked May 30th and I'm expecting it to cancel, our May 13th one already has been.

Let's keep this thread alive. I find myself looking at this thread every few weeks. I really like the idea of low-cost, decently made basket. I would want it mounted in the absolute lowest way possible to minimize overall height increase.

What is the issue with running the lowering brackets in the 4th gen orientation? Does this cause the basket to make contact with the high point of the roof ?

I saw the post about using 1" square alu tubing as a spacer with the lowering mounts in 4th gen orientation. The pictures are grainy, but it seems like 3/4" could work and then some trimming of the the U bolts..

Could the lowering brackets be used in the 4th gen orientation, with some Delrin strips to raise the basket the minimal amount for clearance?

I bought a Rola rack about a year ago and am finally getting around to installing it.

From what I learned here, I picked up the 4X Innovations mounting kit in 304 stainless.

After all of the complaints about the finish, leaking/rusting, etc...I inspected my rack and I have to say I wasn't impressed with the finish or some of the welds.


I conditioned and sprayed mine with a nice truck bed liner. Came out great. No weld leaks now I'll pay close attention to sealing all of the joints and hardware during final assembly.

I may wrap the wind deflector...AND I am bungee prepared in case I have any similar rack vibrations.

I still can't decide if it's better to mount the 4X Innovation brackets in normal or inverted orientation (and if one is any better for wind noise, vibrations, load bearing or looks), so that's my only undecided piece.

I expect to install by the weekend and will post completed pics when done.

I picked up some spares here on eTrailer.com when I needed more. I ran 6 on a different vehicle to ensure lots of mounting with the extension.

Hey all. Figured I'd use this thread to post my personal example of this set-up in a DIY fashion.

I welded my Rola Basket with extension into one piece, then welded slotted tabs onto the bottom. The slots allow a little lateral adjustment and to allow all the tabs and angle brackets to be the same. I used 3/16" angle iron mounted to the factory rails using carriage bolts with a welded captive nut on the bottom (since it's hard to get to in that spot!).

I used galvanized bolts since stainless is expensive and it seems to be holding up fine. You'll see the angle iron brackets are tapered towards the inside of the basket- this is because the basket sits low enough on them that it would cause interference.

I used the old rubber tubing that comes with the basket/extension as a vibration isolator between the tabs and the angle iron brackets. The bolts holding the basket on use a lock washer to mitigate against backing out.

Everything is super sturdy and allows me to easily unbolt the basket when not needed leaving me with a nice clean vehicle! The angle iron brackets stay mounted to the rails and I thread in a spare bolt and antisieze to keep the threads in the captive nut safe from corrosion.

Wow, nice work! Glad to see this thread is still going after all this time! My rack is still going strong, still hasn't sucked in any water, though recently had to remove it because one of the Rotopax mounts broke. Gave it a good once-over, and other than looking a bit weathered, it's still rock solid.

By the way, only just learned of these goofy Venture packages, which is why I logged on... lol The Yakima MegaWarrior is just way too big for the 4R, looks ridiculous. Can't say I like the new TRDpro rack either, though I gotta admit if the factory rock rails had been available when I got my RDGs, I probably would have gone for it.

Carry on, the rack is still worth it at $200...

I'm hoping someone here is looking to part ways with their mounts for cheaper. I'd even take a used set of the low profile (4xinnovations) mounts if someone wants to sell them for cheaper. Just looking for a cost effective way to mount this basket on my roof that doesn't cost more than I paid for the basket.

You should be able to easily build clamps to mount to standard 4Runner roof rails using u-bolts or bolts/brackets. Should be able to fab up some good mounts for $20 at Home Depot.

The way I see it... What good is the basket if you can never mount it? Buy the cheapest version of the mounts you can find, and be happy that you didn't spend $150+ (I would hope) on your basket. You can probably make your own version for less than $20 total with some U bolts from the hardware store, but it won't be a great fit.
