Installing Diff Drop help...

Hey all,

So I'm finally getting around to putting in my differential drop and am having difficulties removing the front bolts/nuts. They're on there REAAALLY tight and with the angle (the nut being behind the radiator) I'm having a bit of a difficulty. I've been at these for an hour or so with no luck. I put a wrench on top and squeeze as much of it as I can into a breaker-bar, but without success I've tried the above mention also with a wrench and long bar on the bottom pushing/pulling in opposite directions. Still no luck. And of course I've lubed the heck out of it with WD40 (as best as I can get the can up there, at least).

So here I am (once again) asking for some help. Anyone have any tips or tricks I can use to get this thing loose and free? Thanks for any help you can give me!

I ran into the exact same problem when I went to install my diff drop, and I have a super easy solution. Don't install it. About the same time, I read a couple threads here that discredited at least SOME of the effectiveness of the diff drop (like it only drops the CV's around 1/2 in, it changes the angle of the drive shaft, which isn't ideal, etc). The arguments made sense to me, so I decided to just not do it. I only had about 2" of lift anyway, and my CV's look fine. I havn't had any problems with it.

Just food for thought. I don't think it is as necessary as many threads here make it seem. I think some people have trouble with CV's, and some don't, it isn't as clear cut as lift=diff drop needed.

You could at least try running it without for a while.
 
Don't think that hasn't crossed me mind :D. Several times! Except for that I'm about to put my front blisties onto the third notch giving me a 3 inch lift up there. I've been running 2-2.5 inch lift with out the drop without any issues so far and thought I should take that extra step to insure I don't damage my CV's.

The 2 front diff bolts are torqued down to 101ft lbs, so they're gonna pretty tough to get off for the first time. If you can't get it off by hand, maybe find someone with an impact wrench. I'd still recommend the differential drop though.
 
use some wd40 or some kind of penetrator on them.. Then come up with some kind of 'cheater' bar to get some leverage on it. They'll break loose eventually. Drink some muscle milk before the install if you feel that will help..

Agreed, the more leverage you have (maybe find a strong steel tube around 3ft. in length, slide over your wrench), the easier it'll be.

WD-40 can work alright. I prefer PB Blaster. I never used to use it, then I tried it, works amazing.

Hit them with an impact wrench. Alternate between tightening and loosening.
