Installing double din and backup camera

Was going to buy the Pioneer AVHX4600BT.

Add the:
PAC TATO & PAC SWI to retain factory JBL amp and steering wheel controls

My question is whats a good backup camera? I saw ones where I remove a licence plate light and add the camera - but then that seems like the camera is off center. Don't I want the camera as centered as possible?

I'll just say that no matter how good your backup camera is and how well positioned it is, you should NOT be staring at your camera while backing up.

Use the camera like an additional mirror that provides another vantage point, and with that attitude it wont' really matter if it is off centered.

Im thinking of replacing the oem nav unit also . seem like the only difference between AVH-X4600BT vs AVH-X5600BHS is the xm and hd radio.

How difficult is the install. Is it just plug and play? I would like to keep the steering wheel controls also..

Im not a audiophile. However is the spec. it says navigation optional?? how does that work?

I have front, side and rear view cameras on my Land Cruiser. I only use my cameras to gauge distance from objects, I still use my side view mirrors and my back window (when I can see out of it) to do guide my actual movement.

I only spoke up because I've encountered people who feel that a rear view camera will solve all their parking difficulties when in reality it just gives you another viewing angle. Just like I can't back into a parking space only looking at my rear view mirror (I need to use my side mirrors and back window if possible), I can't back into a parking space only looking at my rear view camera.

edit: well I probably could, but don't feel safe or confident doing it.

This ^. I just recently installed a backup camera (the one that replaces the factory light) and it's a great asset while reversing, but I don't fully rely on it. I mainly use it for checking how close I am to the garage door and making sure I don't run something over.

My camera view is actually pretty center. Obviously not perfect but it's not off enough to make a difference.

i stare at the cameras but like you said, i use it as a tool to help my parking, its no replacement for common sense!

I have a whole case of these that I import from Korea private label. I buy cases(50 pieces) at a time. If you can read korean that's what it says on the box lol

honestly....I spent $10 on a camera from amazon and it lasted me 3 years before I had to replace it. you get what you pay for but $10 for 3yrs isn't bad. i just replaced it again with another cheapo one and it works great.

i didn't want to drill any holes or spend a lot of time wiring so i took one of the bumper screws out next to the trailer hitch, put the screw through the mounting bracket, and screwed it back in. easy quick install and it gets a good view

like others said don't rely on it, i still look out of my windows and use my mirrors more than my camera.

this concept is fine when you DIY, but when i sell and install 15 pieces on a slow month. a few coming back for warranty and repairs can really cut into the bottom line. So far out of ~300 pieces, i had 8 bad 4 are sold over the counter, coincidence?. 3 were installer error and one DOA. So i would say i had only one bad out of the box in the last 2 years

[MENTION=93434]gshadow325[/MENTION] of course, if I was installing on customer cars I wouldn't go this route. but for someone who doesn't rely on it or use it much the cheap route made more sense. I've been doing car installs for 20+ years so the install is correct and clean, its just a cheap camera that's exposed to the Colorado elements year round. spending $10 on a camera every few years that takes me 5mins to swap out isn't a big deal to me.

It works great for a cheap Chinese product. Only been using it for a few weeks though. But I bought 2 of them just in case, because they're so cheap. If it craps out it'll take half an hour max to replace it.

I have a Kenwood DNX5120 HU. But it's a simple RCA cable so anything would really work.

installed the license plate type from pyle. just screw on license plate and hook up the cables..worked for 2yrs and crapped out, cost a lil over $20, bought another unit to replace the failed unit...
didnt want to spend $150 on the panasonic rear cam

I recently installed a 5600bhs. I also installed a camera.

Just FYI.. I used metra harness converter to keep the oem AMP.

One thing I dont like about it is it has a low frequency air/noise even if the stereo is off.. Its very slight but still annoying.

I also used metra axxes steering control. it works flawlessly.

For the camera. I used a cheap amazon one. for 18 bucks; if it breaks il just buy a new one. Note the video wires are not long enough so you will need a rca connector/extension.

I just mounted the camera with 3m double sided tape under the right side of the license plate light. It does not look too much off center.

Final note... Spend an extra 15 dollars to buy a bypass module..

The new stereos will not bypass the E-brake. I tried grounding the wire and even made a relay switch.. In the end I just bought the bypass and all you have to do is connect 3 wires. Its small and cleaner.


Of course the easy way is to pay 300 dollars for a shop to install.

Still working like a charm!!

I really like the LED in the camera but it no where near matches the stock light, haha. The LED is a little blueish and obviously brighter. You may be able to match the LED color but not sure how to install it.

Honestly, my right side license place bulb has been burnt out since I put the camera in so I've only been running the LED light :lol:
