Installing LC80 snorkel. Need help with fender removal

I'm attempting to install the snorkel and it's been really frustrating so far. When drilling the holes in the A pillar, the self tapping screws were too long and didnt slide all the way in.

Also, i cant reach some of the bolts on the snorkel from the engine bay. Anyone know how to remove the front fender??

So, open the door and you should be able to see some of the bolts for the fender, then remove the fender liner and turn the wheel all the way one way for some of the other bolts and the other way for the rest of the bolts. Its not too bad, just need a 10mm and 12mm wrench.

Pop the clips for the fender liner and go in from the bottom. I didn't even do the pillar mount, mine barely moves at 80 mph.

I need to remove the headlight to get the front part of the fender out from under the headlight, but theres a screw I can't seem to reach. Fml

I used needle nose pliers to squeeze the ends and then push down. They'll pop out. Can always use a flat head and push one side at a time in and down.

You'll need to trim down the hose, I think I took about a 1/4" off. It's still slightly twisted but I haven't noticed it being an issue. I need to pull the entire thing back off anyhow because the very front stud isn't long enough to get a nut on, so you might want to think about extending that stud. When I do that I'll straighten everything out.

You're already cutting a massive hole in the fender.. What's a few more holes?? Especially in the fender, which can be replaced.

Holes in the A pillar I can understand the extra hesitation.

Either way, you have to decide just how committed you are to your rig when you start making mods like this. They aint for everyone..

It's not that bad actually. I just pulled my headlight when I did the install, so it's just a few bolts to get the fender off. I didn't catch your year, but mine has the cladding and that was the hardest thing to deal with. There's a piece on the front of the fender that hooks around the bumper cladding, so you can't just pull it straight out, you have to maneuver it a little before it'll come off.

So my process was: 10mm socket to get the top bolts out, 10mm socket to get the 3-4 bolts out with the door open, then however many bolts are holding the cladding on from the fender well. Then start from the door and pull straight out. Then move to the front of the fender and swing the back out to unhook the front, then it should just "pop" off.

It sounds easier than it is, but it should make sense when you're looking at the truck.

Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't be scared of drilling a large hole in the fender. But self taps seem like a stupid way to secure it. Plus, look how messed up those holes look.

There is always a smarter way to do something.

Haha well once the big ass hole was drilled into the fender, i wasn't going to complain about the tiny ones on the A pillar!

Anyway, I finally got the bastard installed, with a lot of cursing. I had to make the holes for the snorkel bolts bigger. Once i did that, everything was A LOT easier. I said F*** it to the inner fender and just pulled it right out.

Looks great in my opinion, glad to have it done. Thanks for all your input!

Does anyone who's running a snorkel notice a gross increase in wind noise from it during highway driving?

Not that critical seeing as I already have a full size roof rack with lights and a bunch of other crap hanging off my truck, but just curious.


Got any pictures of how your inside/engine bay connections look?

I agree. I would love to see some more photos. Do you think it was worth it? What does the airbox/snorkel connection look like? Can you get a photo from the driver sit to see how much it blocks the view?

I am very tempted to do this mod, but the amount of mods that people seem to have to do is a bit crazy. Thanks for posting your success though!

As far as needing one in the desert, why yes, yes you do need one in the desert. All that dust being sucked into your fender from your wheels as well as if you're following anyone is going to clog up your filter right quick. The snorkel keeps the intake mostly above the dust line which keeps your filter cleaner for longer. I haven't even been near water deep enough to care yet, but I've been on a lot of dusty and dirty trails in the last 2 months and my filter looks good still.

Could also run across a flash flood some day when you need to get somewhere and maybe have no choice but to attempt to cross it, especially in an emergency. You never know.

Oh I know of plenty of good reasons to have one here in AZ. :cheers: There's lots of trails I've ran here and up north in the state that have had uncertain water crossings. Not to mention the urban flooding we get during monsoon season. I anticipate the question(s) coming from those who don't know better. :der:
