Installing Racing Seats

After weighing the pros and cons of reupholstering my seats versus buying a set of wet okoles, I think I've decided to do neither.

Instead, I've ben looking at installing aftermarket seats. I've searched the forum and found some helpful install threads, but they're all old and the pictures don't load anymore.

Has anyone installed aftermarket seats that can post a picture/make a recommendation?

I was thinking something like this:

For a 1987 4Runner....hmmm they didn't show anything for 2nd or 3rd gens?

Man, you can't beat the price on those. That one review said they're small for someone 5'11", though, and I've got a couple of inches on that. I need new seats pretty badly, though.

...I'm, uh, vertically challenged. The height issue is not one that pertains to me so I disregarded that review haha.

But reupholstering is ~$400 and thats not replacing the padding. A decent set of wet okoles is ~$275 but then I'm still sitting on 20 year old bum juice from the PO. These are comparable in price but you get the peace of mind of a new seat. Granted you'd have to buy seat rail brackets but those aren't too expensive.

I'll definitely post a review on my build thread. I know I want them--just not sure if I want to get the tan vinyl or if I want to switch to a black cloth seat. They have some cool black ones with red accents. Might try those.

Those look good. I put a set of these Hunsacker seats in a 1985 toyota extra cab and it turned out really nice. I just made my own brackets. I don't think they are available anymore. I would be interested to see if those work also.

I just saw a write up the other day for seats from a 99-00 Range Rover. They looked really nice and can be had in good condition used (Land Rovers have AWFUL reliability, people ditch them below 100k). Just a thought.

If you like being able to see out the back window(directly, not through the mirror), you won't like the high-back style seats. Also the racing-style bolsters force you into one exact sitting position, and will get really annoying on a long trip.
I'd rebuild the existing seats with some replacement OEM/OEM clone covers plus new foam, or look into grafting non-high back seats from a salvage or other vehicle. Both options might end up being more expensive than cheap racing seats, however.

Those are some good points--the high backs might get annoying. A lot of the seats they have on their website are adjustable though. Or they recline at least. That was one area I've been looking into a lot is finding a seat that adjusts in as many ways as possible, and finding one with reviews that says it works for normal street driving as well. Good things to look into

Installed Mastercraft Baja RS seats with lumbar and heat add over the weekend. Took longer than I thought. I purchased Corbeau brackets made for 96-02 4Runner to simplify install. Ended up grinding off the Corbeau fixed seatbelt mounts and bolting directly to a nut pre welded into the beefy Mastercraft seat frame. This allows the seatbelt buckle to slide with the seat like the factory seats. The Corbeau seatbelt buckle mount welded to the bracket frame was simply unusable for me and was probably one my biggest setbacks during install as far as time. Overall, the bracket is well made and sturdy.

Other mods required include drilling new holes into the Corbeau frame and widening the tracks 3" total to match the base of the Mastercraft seat. I added about 3/8" of additional shims to the front of the seat to give more of a rake.
