Instant help / advice: Extended warranty

This is a long shot, I know i tried to do some quick searching, but I am just not finding the answers that I need quickly. Maybe some one on this fine Saturday morning will help us.

Question: Should I purchase an extended warranty or not? Which warranty is the best "bang for the buck". I know just enough from reading the forum to know that if I do choose to get extended warranty, I should negotiate.

Our possible new addition to the family is a 2014 4x4 SR5. She has EE, CD, KH and CF as options. MSRP is $37060. Oh and she is Barcelona Red. Going to the dealer today. Just want to be prepared.....as much as possible.

Ok, I know I will keep searching, but if someone out of the kindness of their heart wants to reply with helpful personal experience I will be very grateful.....thanks!

If you do decide to get the extended warranty, look elsewhere than the dealer also. If financing, I think your bank can get/give it to you cheaper, just check the fine print on what it covers.

Thanks. We purchased an extended warranty through the bank with our Sienna. I hope there is a big difference when you get an official Toyota warranty, not a third party.......... I was not happy with all the fine print you speak of........ Example: one of the sliding doors on Sienna was "cranky", not broken completely, but cranky. That extended warranty did nothing.......
Toyota direct the same story?.......

If you plan on keeping it well beyond the end of the factory warranty then there is value in them. Try to get one that's "exclusionary" which means that everything is covered except for what is spelled out in the brochure they provide.

1. Aim to pay 1/2 of what they try to sell it to you for.
2. Haggle the deductible, if they say there is one. If it's $100, try to have it at $50.
3. Make sure it's through a reputable company, a quick google should tell you.
4. Haggle the coverage, by that I mean they may offer 6/80, haggle it to 8/100 or more
5. See if it's transferable in case you decide to sell it later
6. GET IT ALL IN WRITING - a lot of dealer finance guys will promise you the world to get you to buy one.
7. AVOID the prepaid maintenance plans, waste of money.

Additionally, some will let you get your money back at the end of the contract if you never use it. Might want to see if they have that option also.

know what you mean, lol, had it on my first off the lot, got to near end of the 100k, never needed it. Blew it off on my 2nd t4r, 2.5k short of the 100k.

Still not a problem with it, or needed it. very sound and reliable ride. Now I probably just jenks myself.

This forum is AWESOME. Thank you so much for your suggestions!!

You will not get jinxed!! You helped me out, Karma will take care of you. :)

How many of you would even bother to get the extended warranty on this 5.5 (right name for 2014?) ??

With a new 4Runner, if you don't get the warranty, I wouldn't loose any sleep, but heck, you are spending $37grand. It's insurance and relatively cheap if something really expensive broke. If it were me, I'd go for the extended warranty EVEN if you likely won't use it. Better safe than sorry.

Good luck!! That 4R sure is nice looking!

hearno is right about the haggling. I went into the office and they presented a number to me and told me I had 30 days to purchase the warranty. If I didn't buy it on the spot and came back to purchase it within the 30 days it would be $500 extra. I told her I knew exactly what the cost to them was from reading the forums and that she only had one chance to present an addition price or I was going elsewhere. They came back about 60% lower. When I went back out to the sales guy he asked me if I purchased a warranty and smiled from ear to ear when I told him yes. When I told him how much I paid he refused to talk to me the rest of the transaction.

In 2011 you could buy the warranty within 30 days from any dealer. Not sure if they changed it
