Intake help

I had some spare intake parts and made an intake for my 90 4runner that basically put a cone filter right out of the throttle body. To my dissappointment, it wouldn't even start up for more than a second or two. I guess those sensors (maf, etc) in the stock airbox really do something
any way to bypass this or get this to work? Any way to get some better intake on a budget? My gas mileage is ridiculous right now, this is supposed to be my daily driver damnit! and rather than replace the dirty stock air filter, i'd like to make this work

Without a MAF, the engine will chug and die. This is so the computer can calculate how much air is going into the engine, so it can configure the air/fuel ratio correctly. With an incorrect air/fuel ratio, the engine cannot run. Think (very) poorly tuned carb.

Whatever you do, you will NEED to have those sensors connected.

I've heard of bypass modules that just trick the computer into thinking there is a MAF attached, but there's no way that will be as efficient as the computer will have bogus data about the incoming air.

Thats right on.

Also that CAI will do nothing for your gas mileage.

Stock the 3.0L get 14-16MPG with 33's on it. you must get really bad MPG.
