intake mods

any type of mods that can be done on an 04 v6 factory air intake to up performance ? whats the xtra filter that sits behind the air filter in the air box ? i am currently running a K&N replacement filter.

There are some aftermarket intakes, K&N and a few others. I don't know what the preference is.

The second filter is to control HC emmissions at engine shutdown. It prevent raw fuel fumes from escaping. I can't imagine that being a big source of emmissions. I would think filling the gas tank would trump that 10x over. Maybe I don't get it.

Well filling the gas tank may pollute more in one instance, but think of how many times most people shut off their vehicle over the life of one tank of gas.

True, like I said I don't know. I understand the concept if you had a carb. When you shut a fuel injected engine off the fuel flow completely stops when the key is turned off. There is no 'reservoir' of fuel to fume. The intake is dry all the way down to the injector.

The filter obviously works and was necessary for certification. I guess even a few drops really adds to the output and when they

The most common route that most user's of the 4.0L V6 do as far as intake mods go is to replace the setup with a Cold Air Intake (CAI). Two brands that seem to come above others in popularity are the TRD intake and the AFe Intake. Both are in a sense the same as AFe makes the TRD one as well with only slight cosmetic differences. Another intake that is supposedly built very well and rugged is the CAI from Volant. The nice thing about these three brands is that they utilize a conical high flow filter that's placed in an enclosed box that draws air through the factory fenderwell hole. No hot engine air to get sucked in.

I don't know about the v6's but i wish TRD will come up with a CAI for the V8's.

Volant has one.

K&N has one too, but I'm not as big of a fan of it since it's really not a cold air intake like the other designs out there.

Agreed, I had a K&N on my V8 and removed it. I felt for the power it made up high in revs it lost an equal amount down low. It also made tons of noise no matter how you drove, and droned. This coming from a guy with a straight piped turbo diesel, a F4i with a D&D muffler, and a subaru with no cats or resonators. It was irritating. *End of rant*

Same here, stock box with a K&N filter works good for me. Price for the gains isn't worth it for the CAI's

Isn't the stock intake a CAI? The pipe goes straight from the fender well to the filter. It also doesn't appear to be very constricting, like a 4" pipe throughout. I'll just be getting a K&N drop in for my new ride.
