Intake recommendations

I just bought a 1996 4Runner V6, and I want to drop in an aftermarket intake.

There are 4 or 5 that I have seen available (k&N, weapon-R.. etc) anwyays. I'd like to get an air intake system (short ram) not just a drop in filter. Any buying advice anyone has would be appreciated!

Also, any places online you guys have purchased from that have filter systems would be great. I'd *like* to spend less than $250 (the price of the K&N) as long as i can get similar performance.

K&N seems to be the favorite here on the board but i believe that Volant also makes one as well as someone else.

K&N and the deckplate mod;you'll get the same dyno proven wheel horsepower result (6-8whp) as you would from the $200+ K&N Filtercharger but it'll cost only $50. The deckplate is available from any marine shop for about $12.

You leave it open on road but if you are doing some water crossing you just screw the deckplate cover back in and you're ready to go.

Well, i *JUST* found out about the deckplate after writing this post. It looks like a killer idea. I think i'll definitly have to try it. One question though, has anyone had issues with dust and dirt from gravel roads (i live on a gravel road, so I freqently would have to deal with dust) as long as serious off roading is the only issue, i'd like to keep it open... Also is there any gas mileage improvments from air filter mods, just curious, because i've heard of it with other vehicles.

Save your money. All they do is sound louder and make you feel as if you have more power.

I put a screen from a window behind the deckplate to keep out larger objects like leaves and such and yes it is a bit louder but since I did the mod I get 15-20 more miles a tankful consistently and I document my mileage every tankful.

Plus the dyno proven horsepower is worth the $14 I spent on the mod.

Yeah, I assumed that better airflow would equal at least some improvment in gas mileage. By the way, do you have the K&N drop in filter, or does your deckplate box use the stock filter?... i'm planning on using the K&N reguardless just because of it being washable and the million mile warranty that K&N offers.

Also the screen seems like a good idea, i doubt that could restrict the airflow

Another question i had was, i know it's a 4 inch deckplate that is usually used, but will a 6 inch fit? ... or is it pointless to go any bigger...

4" is fine but some guys have to have it bigger just to brag.

I've been switching back and forth from the OEM to the K&N and seeing if there's any MPG diff but right now I think the open hole in the airbox is what's giving me the extra MPG.

Ok... i *JUST* finished the deckplate mod... and HOLY CRAP, it rules. That is probably the best bang for your buck mod that exsists. At wide open throttle i can really feel/hear the power difference, there really is no reason not to do the deckplate mod Also, last night i ordered my amsoil air filter (I saw dyno testing showing better performace than K&N, and it filters better)... Last on the way are my splash guards for the front two wheels... i'm removing my running boards and it looks goofy without the factory splash guards. I'm well on my way to having the car of my dreams ... thanks for the help guys

Unfortunatly yes but I'm not sure if anybody has tried it on the 4th gens and I haven't really looked at the airbox so I'm not sure if it could be done.
