dont waste your time or money with a CAI. they dont do anything other than suck hot air from the engine bay. i had a K&N CAI and tossed it for the stock air box and gained at least 1.5mgp and noticed a power increase. if you want your truck to sound cool and dont care about mileage then sure buy one. but the stock set up(with the mods mentioned by pitbullrescuer) will yield more power and better mileage.

The CAI kits do not work well for these engines. The stock box is the way to go. The best intake improvement in my opinon is the Airaid MIT. You can also do a "o ring mod" and a highflow filter. Still, I don't think they do a whole lot either. The main improvement of the Airaid MIT is cleaning up the engine bay. You know, getting some of that plastic crap out.

The best thing you can do is clean the MAF and Throttle Body.

By the way, I know how hard it is to change direction after you have your mind set. But you really should keep the stock box.

Also, I have the deckplate mod and prefer to keep it closed. It is louder with it open and faster at WOT but for stop and go I like the box closed.

Despite all the negative opinions on CAIs ...I've gone from 16.5 mpg to right around 19 mpg by installing an Injen CAI which uses the new Amsoil dry nano-fiber filters.

If you are going to get a CAI stay away from the oiled filters.

Love my K&N CAI. I have been running it for 5 years and no problems.

I have yet to hear an argument against CAI that holds up. The K&N actually comes with a heat shield and contrary to what is posted above, it draws air from the 3-4" hole next to the CAI (~ where the turn signal is)

Also note that K&N has DYNO sheets up on their website showing a 5-6HP increase on a 99 Tacoma with the same 3.4L V6 engine that is in our 4Runners.

You say in another thread you have only $300 for a lift but you want to drop $200+ on something many members don't reccomend when there is 2 other $5 mods that get you quite a bit more airflow than stock, and you also say that you want a magma flow muffler. My advice to you considering you say you don't have any money, So when that's the case and you still feel the need to mod your truck, you save up and do 1 mod at a time and do it right and don't half*ss it or else yours will end up no better than one of those cars with the stick on chrome trim from autozone. IIRC you didn't pay for your truck so that means you should have quite a bit of money available from saving up from working and not having to buy a car.
