Interest in the Arizona 4Runner Club

I need to put shocks on my 4Runner it's a 1990 two door front and rear 1 something that's going to keep a smooth ride but be able to handle an occasional off road Adventure I would appreciate any suggestions and if anybody knows of a good mechanic I need help I have a 3 point slow I need somebody who can go through that engine and fix what's wrong with it I'm in Phoenix thank you in advance

Sierra Expeditions in Tempe would be happy to install some Old Man Emu shocks for you. Doubt they would be willing to do heavy engine work, but depends how deep you're talking.

Anyone drove forest service roads north side of san Francisco peaks? I'm wondering what the condition of the roads are like up there.

Easy and well maintained. Literally can take a car up/down most of them. The powerline trails around the SF peaks are the steepest thing around. Very pretty....nice weather this time of year....will probably see some deer among the Aspens.

We went there last Sunday and it was great. Great place to camp and amazing scenery the road to Lockett meadow was little narrow. Really enjoying new 4runner with KDSS. Definitely need to go back there in the Fall for Aspen trees.

Hey fellow runners. My 1st gear is popping out. Pretty dang sure its the synchros.:frusty: Anyone know of a shop that will do a rebuild at a decent price? I'm in Casa Grande, but the beast is still drivable so if I have to head to the valley or to Tucson, its not an issue. Or, if anyone has any leads on a 3.4 and wants to give me a good excuse to pull the trigger on a swap....

Holy thread revival! Awesome sauce! I'm in east Tucson. Was out playing on some quad tracks with her today. Hehe. Hoping to make a run to Cherry Creek one of these days when the fires have cleared.

This may be a simple fix, simply worn shifter bushing. Take a look at

This is for a Tacoma, but it's all the same.

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, I already tried that. Got the whole set from Marlin Crawler, and it helped for about 5 minutes lol.

Hi Everyone,

I just purchased my 1998 4Runner last week and now that I have driven it for a little bit I am starting to see that the rear axle will be needing new seals and possibly bearings. Have anyone of you done this replacement yet or did you just take it to a shop and let them do it?
I was thinking about repairing/replacing both sides myself. Do you know if there a machine shop that will press the bearings for me? I live on the north side of Phx and I might call the Luke AFB Hobby Shop to see if they have a press that I can use.

Welcome to the club. I love my 98. I can't help with the shop to do the pressing but this is a great thread on the whole job.

I have watched some great videos on how to replace the seal and bearings. I am putting in my order for new parts today and hopefully this weekend I will be doing the replacements.

Amazing the amount of Taco trades!
Had a beautiful 06 trdor quad cab Taco. Got rear ended at low speed with the hitch in - so it bent the frame and they totaled out the truck. We put the insurance towards a 11 Trail Edition 4r and I love this truck!
Also: agreed about overlanding and not just wheeling!
