Interest in this Roof Rack?

The Fab shop that is doing my front bumper has made these roof racks for Jeep Cherokees and would like to see if there is interest in these for our 4 Runners. Let me know what you all think. Obviously it is just sitting up there but He is going to make mounts and will have it on my truck for a little while.

He makes two versions, one is set up for 4 round 6" lights, the other one is set up for 4 rectangular lights in front and both with 2 rectangular lights in rear for back up or work lights.

Looks nice. Although to me it seems very restrictive to airflow which would cause even worse gas millage than the majority of baskets out there.

If he could mimic the Gobi low profile rack that I didn't have to sell a kidney to buy I'd be interested.

So you think dropping from 16mpg to 15 mpg by having the rack on there is a deal breaker? LOL I will have to look at the Gobi low profile but the main purpose is to add function and cargo space. Surprisingly it doesnt weigh as much as it looks. Will definitely track my mileage and let everyone know the impact.

Add in lights on the front of it and you are basically creating a wall. No doubt that thing is strong, but I think the front and rear would be very restrictive probably causing a worse MPG drop than 1.

Maybe it's just the fact that I find the Gobi low profile rack to be F****** sexy.

I like yours, but I too think your truck will take a hit in gas mileage on the highway...

It looks good. I'm interested if the price is right. Not to worried about the mpg considering it's going on a 4800lb truck with a lift and mud tires. Gobi is nice too, this is just new and I'm curious on the price.

This will probably be in around the $650 to $700 range and the other version he makes is a little lower profile. It is the same side profile but doesnt go up so high in front since it is about 2" shorter to fit smaller 4" or the rectangular lights.

idk, i think the front lip looks good. mount some BA lights on it and call it done. would be interested if had the money if it cleared the sun roof.

That's alot for a rack that looks somewhat out of place on the Runner. I can see it working with an XJ or WJ, but you can tell with the BajaRack and the Gobi that they're tailored specifically to compliment the lines and style of the 4Runner, whereas that just looks plopped on the roof. I understand it's about the cargo, but at what cost? How often would you completely fill your truck AND a BajaRack to the point where you're wishing you had an uglier, yet larger roof rack?

I'm all about creating new things and people getting out there and not buying, but building their own parts...but I'm simply not a fan.

It'll look a lot different when painted. Also when lights are mounted it'll have great protection hoops over the lights to keep branches from knocking them off.

I was thinking the same thing. I'd like to see it painted and installed with lights. I think it could turn out pretty cool though. post some pics from a greater distance so we can get an overall view of it on your 4runner.

Liny, you are entitled to your opinion and it's fine. However one of the reasons it looks plopped on there is we literally just set it up there to see if it would look ok and worth developing a mounting system for our trucks. I am taking my truck in on Thursday and starting on mounting brackets. As with any product the initial one might go through several changes before the production piece.

One of the things I mentioned is that we need to make sure it clears the sunroof with it tilted open but have it as low as possible.

Too many roof rack manufacturers charge REDICULUS prices when they could charge less, and subsequently make more by selling volume. ..

Think of it this way - would you rather own 1% a high end steak house wtih 500% markups on your food & beverage or would you rather own 100% of the rights to sell all McDonalds franchises with only a 4% overide / margin? Obviously the money is in the volume of sales with a smaller margin as opposed to being the high-end margin with fewer sales.

I'm sure it looks better when painted and with lights installed, but coming from someone who owns a roof rack I really don't see the point in spending a ton on one. I have a Yakima Loadwarrior and I hardly ever have it on my rig. The only time I use it is when I go camping/wheeling and don't have enough room in the back for all my crap. Roof racks create a lot of drag and kill your mpg's (especially when loaded) so I really see no point in having a rack permanently mounted with lights on top of my Runner. I understand that I drive a heavy vehicle lifted w/ mud tires and thats why I don't want to add to the decline in mpg's by having a pointless roof ornament on my car 24/7.
