Interesting article about market pressures on the Toyota way

That's an interesting read for sure, while this seems to center more around emerging markets it does bring to mind a few questions. Will Toyota adopt a very similar strategy as Daihastu? If so, will their pursuit of cost-cutting and outsourcing result in a lesser quality Toyota?

Toyota will need to make some aggressive changes here shortly or they just won't be able to compete.
They are making progress with innovation, but still have a lot of stagnation compared to the competition... The "Toyota way" worked for a while, but I know people that tried to apply the same principals in technology related industries (like microprocessor development) and it failed in catastrophic ways.
Hopefully, they can maintain quality while still keeping up with rapidly changing market and regulatory pressures.

as long as they don't screw around with what Toyota is know for :
1. reliability
2. longevity
3. durability
4. resale
I really would hate for this to happen. I buy Toyota's so I don't have to spend time/money getting things fixed or sitting in the service center to get things fixed.
recalls haven't really affected me with Toyota's and some of the issues I see across the board with others makes me glad I have Toyota's.
hell the only recall I've had in the last 3 years is a snail mail with stupid stickers to put in the door jam of the Tacoma in regards to the tire pressure label.
if/when that happens, it will be the downfall of Toyota. once you lose that confidence, they wont get it back to the same degree.

I could be wrong, but the out-sourcing part may have a lot to do with the dip in overall quality seen by some of us.
I know a couple of people who work in one of their U. S. assembly plants. According to them, just about any and everything is made by an outside source. There are of course some parts made by Toyota, but not many.
I suppose it's that way with other auto mfgs.
In another industry I've seen the results of outsourcing. Things went downhill. You loose control when you do that.

Since Toyota still uses Denso as one of their primary parts manufacturers, I wouldn't consider them too far outsourced as they are part of the Toyota Group last I checked.
I was thinking more like most of the parts are no longer Denso, but outsourced.
