I have a 99 sr5 t4r that has a quite interesting problem it has occurred a couple times so far

after coming to a stop at a light i feel a bang like someone has hit me in the back but no one is behind me

the other thing that happened twice is that after coming to a stop at a light I try to move of and the car revs but goes no where. I put it into neutral and back to drive and ever thing is fine.

this has happened over the last 6 months the first time it happened i took it to toyota and they couldn't figure it out they suggested that i get a new tranny.

Has anyone one else experienced this before i go crazy

mileage is 109K
problem first occurred at 107K

Had trans flushed after the first occurance by dealer and it seemed like it went away.
checked fluid and it is at right level.
took a long drive from NY to FL then back to GA and didn't have a problem/

occurred all other times once I got to GA

My 4runner has that problem as well, the clunk or thump from behind after coming to a stop. I know Lexus GX470s have that problem too. There is actually a bulletin for that, where they replace both rear upper and lower control arms and the drive shaft. Probably too much free play in the arms? not sure. My friend's tacoma does that too and also another guy i know, his v8 2003? 4 runner does the same thing. Toyota doesn't have a bulletin out or fix. Not sure why either. I'm already use to the clunk, lol.. not too worried about it.

I have heaerd this complaint befor. I don't remeber what caused it. I feel it a little in my t4r but It is very minor and I need to flush my trany, so I'm hoping that will solve it.

Check your rear driveshaft slipyoke. The taco's have it way worse, but the 4runners have it to sometimes. When the slipyoke doesnt have sufficient grease, it will bind when you stop, then unload when you take off. That doesnt explain the trans not engaging tho. I would take it to a trans shop and have them test it

It sounds like a torque converter problem. It may be a loose plug in the electrical to the converter or a wire that's been rubbed through.

That does remind me went I had the same problem. I know I took it to dealer to complain about it. They don't know exactly where the problem coming from. I remember when I change my diff. fluid with my mechanic friend, I never notice the banging sound anymore.
