I found this article. It sounds like a big sales pitch for Amsoil since the whole site references it, but does anyone have a problem with the fact we could use any API cert. oil and not void the warranty? Is the 0w-20 for the 5th Generation really to increase the average mileage across the fleet? It kind of makes sense to me.

Seems like 5 years from now we'll have 0w-0.

I do believe auto manufacturers in general are specifying lighter weight oils to bring up their CAFE. At the same time, I don't believe they are sacrificing engine longevity as a compromise.

BTW, you were kidding about the 0w-0 thing, right? I'm sure you know that the two numbers represent flow characteristics in "w"inter and warmer temps, so we'll never see a "0w-0" designation for engine oil.

Yeah I'm kidding. It's just the trend I've noticed over my driving experience. I went from 10w-30, to 5w-30, to 5w-20, now 0w-20.

The main thing that interested me was that if it is true about CAFE, then I'd rather put 5w-20 in my car over 0w-20 mainly because of availability. I can't find 0w-20 anywhere but online around here, and it's about to be in the 100s next week temperature-wise.

for the 4th gen its a 5w-30 but i do a 0w-30. mainly because 0w-30 is much easier to find for me.

Or 5w-20 for the 4th. Toyota issued a bulletin back in April 2006 that it was OK to use 5w-20 for certain engines, and the 1GR being one of them.
