Interface Kit for iPod accessory?

Anyone know if this is needed? It's in the list of accessories for the Trail ed. but it says it requires the Nav option.

Interface Kit for iPod (P5) "Allows iPod controls through the vehicle head unit and steering wheel controls. Charges iPod when in use. Connects in the glove compartment allowing the iPod to be concealed for protection." ($299)

I thought the standard, non nav, stereo had iPod support as well. What's the point of this accessory?

There are two non-nav stereos one has a USB aux. which allows you to search your ipod through the interface on the stereo. If you get the T4R with the base stereo which comes one models without bluetooth then it only has the 3.5mm jack, in which case the IPOD adapter accessory would be an upgrade.

I've been contemplating this option too, I have the XM receiver but don't have the steering wheel audio controls. How would I find out if my receiver would have the USB connection on it to connect this to? If connectable would it also display whats playing on my IPod on the receiver?

Ryan S: you can get a better price than $299, I've seen it for under $200.

When I was using the build your 4Runner thing on Toyota.com, this accessory came up and stated that you needed the nav system. But right in description of the nav option it says iPod support.

Anyone with a Trail with no nav have an iPhone? Does it work with the stereo? Does it plug in in the armrest or the glovebox?

I have no idea about the 5th gen, but i bought the iPod interface for my 4th gen, it works with my stock stereo (no SAT ready). It was $190 for interface + installation.

Ryan,

I use my iphone 3GS in my TE w/o nav and it works fine for bluetooth streaming of audio and also handsfree phone calling. The audio streaming is very cool....you can stream stuff off the harddrive(ipod functions) and also internet audio like Pandora:)
