interior handle bar

I have a question for any 2006 4Runner owners.

You know how there is a handle bar inside the 4Runner, on the left and right side?

There's 1 on the left side rear seat.
There's 1 on right side rear seat.
There's 1 on the left side front windshield.
There's 1 on the right side front windshield.
There's 1 on the right side front seat.

Now, my question is...do you guys have 1 on the front side driver seat? (directly to the left of you when you are seated).

I don't have one! I'm not sure if I'm supposed to have one or not. There are 2 base insertions, but there's no bar. So when you look at it, it looks like there SHOULD be a handle bar there. Did they forget to install it in the factory?

Nope. ever since the 4R came out in 2003 it hasn't come with one. you could buy one at the dealership, i think it should be about $20 to $30. partznet probably has it cheaper.

oh ok.. it just looks like they forgot to put it on.. then why not remove that little "groove" or area alltogether?

It's probably a $$$$ issue. In order to remove that area where the handle used to be Toyota would have to spend big bucks to re-tool the interior trim piece. An injection molding tool modification (if it could be modified at all) would cost in the neighborhood of 50 to 100K. A new tool ( if the existing one could not be modified) could cost up to $200K. Easier and more cost effective to simply remove the handle.

When the steering wheel is on the right side of the car in other countries, they just move the grab handle to the left side. If you put the holes on both sides, you don't have to make a country-specific headliner!

toto, hit the nail on the head. It's a universal headliner for LHD or RHD. You can always add that handle back.

Just purchased from Partznet and installed. Took only about 2 min.

Need to get the handle plus the 2 caps. No screws needed. Just use the one's on the existing dummy cover.

I, for one, can't see the need for the extra grab handle on the drivers side. It makes sense on the passenger side, but for the driver, if you get into an 'O-Sh#t' situation you will probably be holding onto the steering wheel and not looking for a grab handle. I use the one on the windshield pillar all the time climbing in, but can't think of a reason to add another, IMHO.

I got the handle to rest my arms in a different position during long trips. I got tired of resting my arm on the window sill, which feels very hard and uncomfortable. So, switching back and forth helps this. It also looks better than the weird looking covers.

Bumping my head on the handle during entry/exit is not a problem (I'm 6'1").

I agree with you, though... If I were to get into an oh S_ _T situation, my hands should definitely be on the steering wheel. Unless, of course, it's an irrecoverable oh S_ _T situation, then I should have my hands covering my family jewels.

Stop on a steep decline. Try to exit and enter the truck. The a-pillar handle is useless.

Never thought of that. Can you tell I don't take my 4runner off-road much.

I guess the A-pillar handle would be of most help on incline situations.

One more reason to get the handle!

"Sometimes" if you're in an o-sh!it situation and you want to keep your body stable, the worst thing you can do is grab onto the steering wheel with both hands. You could very easily and subconsiously rely on it for stability, which you shouldn't do, turn it, the car jerks, you go flying. Conversely, you can safely grab onto the handle with your left hand and try to right the ship with your other hand. I know because I've had this happen several times in my jeep, which has very useful handles on the rollbar. This would happen mostly during low speed offroading.

I like the idea of the handrest just to 'hang' my arm from on long trips.

However, given the limited headroom, I worry about a fixed handle. I wonder if a folding handling (like in a Jetta) would fit?

I installed the handle about a week ago and I have to remind myself that the handle is there to grab. That tells you it's not obstrusive. Don't worry about getting in your way. Think about it... If the handles were a problem, all your "taller" passangers would have complained already.

Like I said on this thread earlier, I'm 6'1" and no problems. I, too, find the ceiling to be low, but the handles don't bother.
