...why some buttons are lit, and some are not???

After one month and 1000miles, I LOVE my new 5th Gen, but one thing is just bothering the hell outta me. Why is it that some buttons are lit when the lights are on, and some are not??? Does my new 4Runner have bulbs burned out? Design decision/flaw?

On the center console, seat heater controls, lit. Rear window switch RIGHT next to them, not lit

To the left of the steering column, Auto Headlight and Wiper heater buttons, lit. Side mirror controls, interior light brightness, and 400W controls, not lit.

Overhead controls, 4WD controls, Homelink buttons lit. Sunroof controls right next door, not lit.

I just don't understand!!!

I've seen it in other brands, too. My guess is cost ... A few pennies here and there.

Besides cost, it is often a matter of perceived status or exclusivity.

For example, higher trim levels (Limited, XSE, TRD,etc) will have more lighted switches, while lower trim levels (SR, LE) will not. Or the "luxury" brands (Lexus) will have more lighted switches than the "lowly" brands.

Often you can swap out lighted switches from higher trim levels or brands to replace your existing unlighted switches. Case in point: I recently purchased a new RAV4 Hybrid. The power window switches in the doors are not lighted, but you can directly replace them with window switches from a Camry that are lighted: I swapped my driver door buttons with backlit ones | Page 22 | Toyota RAV4 Forums
